#PlumeScrolling Daggerstrike Murderbeak, a Grey Heron I photographed at Forest Farm, Cardiff, back in May. So glad I decided to prioritise #NaturePhotography earlier this year, before my thyroid condition began to limit what I could do! #Birds 🦉 🌿
In this photo, almost all of the Grey Heron can be seen standing in some long grass, with buttercups and other wildflowers - the vegetation is covering most of the bird's long legs however. As the bird's name suggests, the plumage is mainly various shades of grey, but the top of the head is black, they eye is yellow with a black pupil and black rim, and the long, powerful beak is blackish above and an orangey-yellow below.

‘Tommy Light the conjuror’ features in the #OnePlaceStudy blog post I published in October 2024, to tie in with the @oneplacestudies.bsky.social prompt #OnePlaceFolklore. His obituary noted that “he continued to practice [conjuring] with considerable pecuniary advantage to the close of his days.”

Thanks for your good wishes in response to this news. 🙏🏻 I've been on my new thyroid meds for 1 week but I have to stop taking them ahead of my treatment. I expect to feel worse—i.e., even more tired—over the coming days, before a gradual recovery afterwards. So I may be less active here for a while.

I wasn't expecting to receive radioactive iodine treatment (for my misbehaving thyroid) until early next year, but I've just had a phone call offering me an appointment next week! Obviously I said Yes to that. Here's hoping that my thyroid-related problems will be resolved sooner than I anticipated.

We get a full view of a Puffin on the right, and can see most of another Puffin on the left (the lowermost part of his or body, and the legs, are hidden by the grass). A little behind and to the right of the Puffin on the left are two more Puffins, but they are further back and we can't see much of them. All are standing upright (watching for marauding Gulls) and look a little like short, stout Penguins except for their narrow, taller-than-wide and colourful beaks (which are blue-grey near the base, red near the tip, and have yellowish lines) and their orange legs and feet. The sides of their faces, and the undersides (or fronts) are white; the rest of their bodies are black.

CA endemic bird Yellow billed magpies, very limited range. Gorgeous, vocal and intelligent Corvids. I hung out with about 20 of them in the oak studded wine country of Paso Robles a few days ago. Always a treat. Lots of interactions with Acorn woodpeckers also, each doing their own thing. 🪶🌿
All four photos are a California endemic bird called a yellow billed magpie found nowhere else on earth.

For #BirdOfTheDay (theme: standing on things, other than the ground) and #HolidayRobin / #FestiveDailyRobin here’s the juvenile Robin who entertained us in Dad’s garden in 2022 (which turned out to be Dad’s last Summer), sunbathing on a solar-powered garden light.

The Robin is facing towards us and slightly to our left, and is also leaning back and towards our right, with body feathers fluffed out and tail feathers fanned, in order to catch the sun's rays. He or she has a brown, speckled head, and amongst the mostly brownish feathers on their chest are the first few reddish-orange ones. The rest of the plumage on the underside is whitish. We can see little of the back or wings due to the fluffed out body feathers; the undersides of the fanned-out tail feathers meanwhile appear very pale brown. We see the solar panel side-on; it is made of back plastic and has upper and lower sections which are circular in shape with the lower section being smaller. A spider web built on the solar light is picked out by the sun in the bottom left corner of the image, and in the background, out of focus, are green leaves and shadows.
