How can beavers influence bat behaviour?

Two new studies across England and Wales reveal an astonishing increase in bat activity in beaver wetlands – thanks to how beavers shape habitats for both bats and their insect prey.

That's the end of Milky Way Season 2025 for this guy.

Earlier tonight somewhere in California.

2x sky shots and a couple foregrounds merged.

Rough ending, but a glorious season. By far my best.

2026 we're planning the early season much tighter.

We're coming for your panoramas, galaxy.

‘Tommy Light the conjuror’ features in the #OnePlaceStudy blog post I published in October 2024, to tie in with the @oneplacestudies.bsky.social prompt #OnePlaceFolklore. His obituary noted that “he continued to practice [conjuring] with considerable pecuniary advantage to the close of his days.”

This one really matters.

MPs are due to vote this week - help us make more than 30,000 messages sent to protect nature. buff.ly/oeRuzeM

Email your MP. Amendment 130 would make sure the new planning systems works for, not against nature.demand they keep amendment 130 in the Bill
It's now or never. This is the last chance to protect nature in the Planning and Infrastructure Bill. Email your MP to keep amendment 130 in the Bill.

Will have to have a listen to this! That path looks familiar – I think it is heading to Winspit below Worth Matravers. Here’s a pic I took when I visited in 2021, looking the other way along the coast from Winspit.

This gnarled beech oozed character. It felt almost like it had a personality, like it could have just walked away like an ent. It looked fantastic in the late evening sun, with the autumn colours behind.

The impact of stopping the meds has been gradual, but noticeable. Really beginning to feel it this evening. Will post what I can, when I can, to cheer myself up as much as anything else!
Thanks for your good wishes in response to this news. 🙏🏻 I've been on my new thyroid meds for 1 week but I have to stop taking them ahead of my treatment. I expect to feel worse—i.e., even more tired—over the coming days, before a gradual recovery afterwards. So I may be less active here for a while.
I wasn't expecting to receive radioactive iodine treatment (for my misbehaving thyroid) until early next year, but I've just had a phone call offering me an appointment next week! Obviously I said Yes to that. Here's hoping that my thyroid-related problems will be resolved sooner than I anticipated.

Every bit the weary traveller still — though I can’t entirely blame the journey home from Yorkshire.
Fatigue and I aren’t friends, just long-time companions.
But I’ve finished the squirrel movie!
A moment of stillness, rustle and joy.
Long-term illness shapes the rhythm of life… so does love.

CA endemic bird Yellow billed magpies, very limited range. Gorgeous, vocal and intelligent Corvids. I hung out with about 20 of them in the oak studded wine country of Paso Robles a few days ago. Always a treat. Lots of interactions with Acorn woodpeckers also, each doing their own thing. 🪶🌿
