#PlumeScrolling Daggerstrike Murderbeak, a Grey Heron I photographed at Forest Farm, Cardiff, back in May. So glad I decided to prioritise #NaturePhotography earlier this year, before my thyroid condition began to limit what I could do! #Birds 🦉 🌿
An early influence on my sense of humour was a book from Mum’s childhood – her Mickey Mouse Annual, published in 1946! Today, for some reason, I have been thinking about this one. 🌧️🌧️🌧️

#Swans are the subject for #BirdOfTheDay today so here is a male Mute Swan in full-on ‘Angel of Death’ mode, heading at full speed towards a couple of Swans who were trespassing on *his* family’s part of the lake. Brandon Marsh, May 2025.

When kitchen sponges like these break down, they release microplastics that end up in the sea – harming marine environments and the animals that live there. And they can't be recycled, so remain in landfill for 100s of years. For eco-friendly sponges see: littlegreenspace.org.uk/reviews/seep...

This reminds of the time* when I was in a health food shop and saw a poster saying ‘Mock Duck.’ I went straight to the nearest pond, pointed at one of its feathery, web-footed, big-billed residents and exclaimed “Hah! Call that a beak?!?” 👉🏻🦆😂

*Events related may be fictional 😉
This is fake duck. It’s lucky it wasn’t named by the people who called fake bacon ‘Facon’.

This is a favorite spread from the book because it’s a self contained story from one morning. It moves from that calm, still, reflective moment to the explosion of the action shot. It's why sticking around is worth the time.

It's #scape day. This is a long exposure of three minutes made of my favorite old snag on my favorite beach. I got to this spot at 5:30am and left 2 hours later. The sunrise was incredible. I had the beach all to myself. #photography #landscape #EastCoastKin #clouds #longexposure

Thyroid update: In the process of being nuked. ☢️

You have to wait two hours after taking the radioidine capsule before eating or drinking. For me, that time is up in a few minutes. Gasping for a cup of coffee and some chocolate... ☕🍫

Sometime in the late 80’s a pair of Mute Swans nested in the garden (next to the greenhouse). We couldn’t hang washing out because the cob would rip it off the line, but generally they were pretty chill and it was a real treat to witness. #BirdOfTheDay #Swans

This is one of the most endangered mammals in the world – there are fewer than 400 alive in the wild right now – so it is pretty special to watch this mom and her two pups emerge from their burrow. Kids will be kids, no matter how rare your species!

P.S. they are Vancouver Island marmots

Watching Labour MPs take a wrecking ball to nature makes me so angry & so sad. Their action tonight voting down amendments to the #PlanningBill intended to protect wildlife & habitats from destruction is so reckless & so counterproductive. People didn’t vote Labour for this 👇

I'm so glad I stayed long enough for the sun to burn off the low cloud at sunrise in this ancient woodland in the south of England.

When the light cast into the thick autumnal air, it lit up the interior colours so perfectly.

Voters want both: homes built and wildlife protected.

MPs should listen to the public, not a false "nature vs growth" narrative.

If nature loses at this stage, it will be because they chose not to protect it.

Tell your MP to back nature: action.rspb.org.uk/page/180990/... 📢
Help stop the Planning and Infrastructure Bill tearing up nature protections
I've just emailed my MP and asked them to vote to protect nature in the Planning and Infrastructure Bill. Will you take action too?
