Yesterday the lovely 🌞 – and the ☁️🌧️ forecast for the week ahead – made me decide to push my luck (I’ve only been on my new thyroid tablets for a few days) and head over to Brandon Marsh. I appreciated this Shoveler cheering me on.

While exploring Brandon Marsh on Saturday, Rob and I came across a couple of birders watching #Siskins feeding on Alder cone seeds. The #birds were high up and with the sun behind them, not ideal for photography—so here's one I photographed last year in Wales. #PlumeScrolling #Nature #UKWildlife 🌿
A male Siskin perched on a small branch. His body is facing away from us and slightly to the right, and he has his head turned fully towards the right. The colours in the plumage we can see is mostly black or shades of green. The top of the head is black, the rest of the head yellowish-green with pale green cheeks; the eye is black and the beak (which is fairly short and ends in a fine, seed-extracting tip) is a mostly grey. The upper part of the back is green with black streaks, the lower part a yellowish-green. The wing and tail feathers are black with bars of yellowish-green. What little we can see of the right flank is whitish, heavily streaked with black. The legs are mostly a dark, brownish colour.

A pair of Little Grebes. Their plumage is mainly of various shades of brown, darker on the body and the top of the head, and paler on the neck and the lower half of the face, but the chin, and the rump, are white. They have short, pointed, yellow bills, short necks, and small, rounded bodies.

Also today at Brandon Marsh, this gorgeous Great Tit! I heard the 'Teacher! Teacher!' song of this species, and I also heard my first drumming Great Spotted Woodpecker of the year. We're not out of Winter yet, but it's lovely to see and hear signs of Spring. #PlumeScrolling #Birds #UKWildlife 🌿
A Great Tit - a female I think - perched on top of a tree stump. The bird's body is facing towards us and slightly to our right, and her head is turned to face us almost directly. Her head (included her eyes and her short beak) is black, with a large patch of white on each cheek. The black colour continues down the middle of her chest, narrowing so that it then continues as a black line down the middle of her belly. Her chest and belly are otherwise yellow, her back and 'shoulders' are green, and the rest of her wings, and her tail feathers, are blue. Her legs and feet are a bluish-grey colour.

If anyone had told me, back when I started birding, that one day I’d be able to watch Avocets at a place just an hour’s drive from my home in West Northamptonshire, I’m not sure I’d have believed them. Today I took that one hour drive (to RSPB Middleton Lakes). #PlumeScrolling #Birds #UKWildlife 🌿

Killdeer around a nearby lake. #1 has great eyebrows, while #2 from the rear, shows just how big their eyes are, and how far to the sides of their heads they are set. Nothinig is going to sneak up on this bird!

A medium-sized grey bird has a white chest and alternating black and white bands going up its upper chest, and neck. It's head is grey, with a white band above its beak and distinct whit eyebrows. Same bird' but view is from directly behind the killdear. It's a little disorienting because the killdear's eyes are clearly visible.
