Random musing on detransition narratives
Random musing, not a final thought, but—I’ve been wondering how much the word “detransition” exists mainly to Other trans bodies. For many detransitioners, even and perhaps especially those who aren’t doing so for safety or political reasons but to reaffirm a gender identity they once claimed, they’re still transitioning. The self they “return” to is never the exact self they had before; even the act of exploring other gender expressions changes you. You come back with more knowledge, and hopefully more clarity of self. Like all of us, they’ve moved through different ways of being. We can never return to a past, only move forward as a synthesis of these explorations. But the “detransitioner” narratives weaponized by anti-trans politics cling to the idea of an “original” identity that is ruined by transition—usually framed around medical changes like HRT or surgery—to claim that gender-affirming care is harmful because it breaks some imagined natural state that a detrantioner can never return to now because they have been “tricked” intro transition. Yet no one can ever return to an untouched original self. We all change. We all move forward, not back. The real issue facing many“detransitioners” is often a material one: they often step away from transition because the path offered to them didn’t fit. Instead of being supported in exploring their own terms, many were handed a narrow, binary script of how we think of gender affirming care (get top surgery, start hrt, wear these clothes to affirm your gender). Our culture loves to prescribe identities, not enable people to discover them. In other words: The intolerant are not following the rules of the social contract of mutual tolerance. Since they have broken the terms of the contract, they are no longer covered by the contract, and their intoerlance should NOT be tolerated. Tumblr response by commasameleon: Sprry as someone who teaches rhetoric, this is a wonderful response to the Paradox of Tolerance. I cannot tell you how many times my students have had debates about this. This is the response. This does indeed fix it. I cannot wait to tell this to my classes now. Philosophically and rhetorically this completely resolves the Paradox of Tolerance and I am floored by its simplicity and angry I never saw it before

Text reads: Lycanthrope (noun): A person who can transform into a wolf, as described in folktales. Synonym: werewolf. The lycanthrope is many things, but "heterosexual" or "cisgender" is not one. To understand the lycanthrope, you must acknowledge it's nature. It cannot be easily categorized as "man" or "beast". Further, the lycanthrope, as it is caught between worlds, cannot be sexed. With a body that changes so willingly, human ideas of how bodies should look or perform simply do not apply. A werewolf is a transient thing. Transsexual (noun): A transgender person, especially one seeking sex reassignment. Synonym: werewolf. The transsexual is a kind of werewolf, then. It, too, is caught between worlds. "Man" and "woman" are just as arbitrary as "man" and "beast". The transsexual cannot be sorted. It's transformation may be slower, more intentional, but it is a transformation. The transsexual becomes othered in body and mind, just as the lycanthrope does. So I ask you: Do you see the beauty in a queered body? A clawed hand covered in blood on a gradient background. Text reads: A queered body represents a threat, and so is vile to many. It's very existance is an offence to decent society. But there's no fault to be found in the body of the lycanthrope nor the transsexual. Even if shocking, or disgusting, or gross, there is not inherent harm done by the werewolves. A queered body is no less desirable than a typical one. In fact, it can be more desirable.
