My take away from what’s happening in Minneapolis is that it crushes the lie that people are by nature selfish. When the time calls for it, people can do astonishing things to keep their communities safe in the face of all odds.

The problem cycling has in this country (and others) is that they can't decide if cyclists are more like pedestrians or cars, and won't spend the money to make them a separate third thing, like the Dutch have. Bikes don't belong on footpaths, but it is unsafe to cycle near motorists.

BlueSky is built by default to be monolingual. And its traffic (over 50%) is dominated by English-speaking 🇺🇸 users. It's pretty dry outside that (really loud and self-absorbed) sphere. I've never been to the US.

Cherry on top, its translation tools feel like a second thought.

The tech industry #enshittification continues at pace. I recently reported another outright scam that was appearing above legitimate results (as a sponsored ad) but Google replied to say that it did not breach their policies. www.rte.ie/news/primeti...
Kilmainham Gaol visitors hit by Google ad ticket scams
Visitors to one of the country's top tourist attractions, Kilmainham Gaol museum, are being hit with a scam which sees them pay for fake tickets through duplications of the museum's official website

Und thus, modernity comes to a close just like it started, with a guy ranting at windmills
Trump: "There are windmills all over Europe. There are windmills all over the place. And they are losers. One thing I've noticed is that the more windmills a country has, the more money that country loses, and the worse that country is doing. I haven't been able to find any wind farms in China."

Any recommendations for books in Irish that are not of a difficulty that makes them impenetrable for a learner but challenging enough to give plenty opportunities to look up words or phrases? Not textbooks, more like novels etc. - I've a few graphic novels but ideally something longer. #Gaeilge

Saw a letter to the Torygraph from a History prof in Trinners (of course) claim that Ireland wasn't invaded by the 'English'because Strongbow was invited by Diarmuid Mac Murchadha.
She, of course, negelected that Henry II landed with 4500 men & siege equipment & had the Anglo-Normans and some Irish

This photo was taken in 1911 using glass plate technology by Herbert Ponting who was part of Scott's Antarctic expedition,

The composition and detail are exquisite with the band of white snow/ice creating a perfect frame around the two people and the ship in the distance

Iconic imo

Wow, if only he was in some sort of position to do something.
Minister for Communications and Media Patrick O'Donovan has hit back at claims that Ireland is lax about regulating companies like X because of the high levels of corporation tax we receive from tech firms.

Minister says it is 'utter rubbish' that Ireland is soft on X because of corporation tax
O’Donovan said it is “beneath” politicians to argue such a point.

Again, I refer to my post where I write about the Attorney General’s paper where he defined the “public interest” as meaning what the Government wants to spend money on.

This is the return of the Royal Prerogative to Irish law, not seen since the Irish Supreme Court killed it in the 1960s.
Interesting response from Taoiseach to question from Darren O'Rourke TD in relation to why the government wants to transfer costs of environmental law enforcement onto ordinary members of the public
