When Wales lowered its default speed limit from 30 mph to 20, it created a perfect natural experiment. England, a nearby jurisdiction did not.

👀 You can see road deaths declined by 25% in Wales after the policy was implemented. Via @20splenty.bsky.social www.20splenty.org/gb2024stats

The 14th Street Busway has been a smashing success: faster commutes, fewer crashes, calmer streets.

So why is Eric Adams blocking a similar plan for 34th Street?

Interesting that I’m not seeing any reports of the “He’s An Asshole But The City Needs An Asshole To Stand Up To Trump” mayoral candidate doing any standing up to Trump re: the unjustified arrest of the sitting Comptroller

There's many things to dislike Cuomo for (and, a few things to like him for, to be honest). But one of the big disqualifications is how bad of a manager he is: a glory-hogging nightmare of a micromanager.

Mamdani really might suck as a manager too, but I prefer to take that risk.
Cuomo acted out a mock job interview between Mamdani and a recruiter.

“‘Hello, I’m applying for the job of the mayor of the City of New York.’ ‘OK, do you have management experience?’ ‘No.’ ‘Have you managed 100 people before?’ ‘No.’"

Trump probably cannot serve a third term as president, the law can't be so easily skirted by technicalities (mostly).

But this is the wrong question. Trump can stay in power in other roles, because power can be exercized from many positions. If Vance was Pres., Trump VP, it'd be the same as now.
Anyone discounting a 3d Trump term per the 22d am + the 12th am is thinking magically: The 22d dsn’t bar *serving* a 3d term, only being *elected* 3 times. The 12th dsn’t bar running for VP unless “ineligible” to serve as Pres, but Trump isn’t ineligible. QED!

On vacation, I can’t help but notice street safety issues here in Portugal. This news story is about two cyclists run over by a driver (note they say driver when reporting about collisions instead of car!) Before was a story about a child getting run over by a motorcyclist. Both were a hit and run.

Judging by the traffic this morning in Manhattan, I'm imagining the fun conversations that will be had by the MTA support staff with drivers who heard Trump canceled it and drove in, only to later get charged. #congestionpricing

My building has been waiting almost 1.5 months to get NYC to sign off on removing scaffolding. That's on top of 6 months for the Local Law 11 work.

Assuming this is normal, the city's inability to field inspectors is adding ~30% to the amount of scaffolding in NYC.

And we're still waiting!

@zey.bsky.social's analysis is spot-on, as usual. But I think it's not that easy to predict what will happen, so analysis and plans are likely to be very wrong.

In general, with changes like this, people overestimate the changes in the short term and underestimate the changes in the long term.
Silicon Valley has pivoted to Trump, and now are talking him into an AI strategy that may enrich a few companies but is far from what we actually need to do to grapple with AI.

If you'd like to make yourself insane about congestion pricing data on the literal first weekday of its existence (compared to first post-NYE Monday last year)

Subway: 3,428,678 now vs. 3,303,727
LIRR: 229,503 vs. 208,960
Metro-North: 202,575 vs. 184,150
Paid crossings traffic: 792,617 vs. 844,853

Am I reading this right? First time NYC subway fare violators will just get a written warning in 2025, no fine. So, it makes sense to just not pay the fare until you get caught.

This doesn’t seem like a wise move.
