When annexation threats started, 🇨🇦ns wondered if 🇺🇸ns would stand up to prevent it.

Our friends/neighbours in MN standing boldly in the cold & directly confronting threats to their communities is the most hope-inspiring thing in this dark time.

Hey @toronto.ca your bike lane snow removal is so bad that a handful of cyclists had to do it for you on their own time. Shame on you for neglecting the absolute basics of managing a major Canadian city in winter! And many thanks to them for their efforts. 🚲💚❄🌨

Bike lane snow clearing party
Albert organized a bike lane clearing party this morning. The goal was to start at Royal York and Bloor, and to work our way east. First step for me: figuring out how to carry a snow shovel on the …

It's not mysterious. Like... at all. Canada wants to expand its international trade network to offset the loss of reliable businesses relations with the USA and is therefore actively pursuing partnerships elsewhere in the world. Who would want to bargain with a maniac who threatens to invade? 🙄
Peter Navarro: "I was tempted to put something up on X and Gettr to the effect of, was Carney looking for a discount on fentanyl while he was over? I don't know what their strategy is. If Canada thinks they can use China as a bargaining chip, that doesn't end well."

#manicure #extremityfetish The longer I do this, the more I understand that indie polish brands are all basically playing with the same ingredients. They do different things with them, and quality of formula certainly varies, but some of the same features pop up across different makers' creations.

“When someone says we can’t miss the boat, I ask: where is the boat going? What exactly will this technology improve? That’s rarely discussed. Since when did we become Big Tech's free PR department?” This is such a good read. AI takeover is *not* inevitable.

"ICE Watch works because it surrounds men seeking approval w ppl loudly expressing their disapproval. The noise has the added benefit of drawing large crowds of bystanders who can quickly outnumber the ICE agents, who then have to decide if they want to escalate a situation or perhaps abandon" it.
For @msnownews.bsky.social, I wrote an article about how ICE Watch is grounded in sociological theories of violence prevention.

The reality is that most men will only commit public violence in extremely specific scenarios and ICE Watch disrupts the conditions necessary for escalation.
Opinion | I'm a Minneapolis sociologist who studies violence. Here's how ICE observers are helping.
Research into how violence occurs shows that disapproval from the people around you can help reduce it.

I avoid plastic as much as possible, and that's not gonna change, but it's interesting to learn how the science isn't yet settled on microplastics in human bodies.

Snow day? Fine, I'm making a fancy breakfast. (Good thing I did my groceries yesterday, just before the snow.) Eggs with seasoned zucchini, pine nuts, Amazing Grey hard goat cheese, fresh ground pepper and hemp hearts; seven-grain rye with avocado; fresh sweet raspberries; a nice malty oolong. 😋

#CurrentlyReading and I'll give some backstory. I have amassed a large book collection over the last 30 years and I have not read all of it. I have a whole (small) bookcase devoted to what I call "purge" books—books I do want to read, but that I'm fairly sure I'll let go of once I'm done. ...

Just a thought. As Twitter (yes I'm deadnaming it) is on the verge of total collapse, now would be a great time to start routinely asking your favourite companies, organizations, news outlets etc. if they've joined BlueSky yet. I love it here and I'd love to see all the "missing" groups show up!

Audio editor for the book I just finished narrating sent along another compliment today: "I've worked with lots of narrators by the way, and this person is really talented." I just saw the film Chronology of Water, starring Imogen Poots and directed by Kristen Stewart, based on the memoir of the same title by Lidia Yuknavitch. That memoir, when I read it in 2012, was a kind of brain explosion moment for me—it opened up a whole new understanding of what memoir could be.

Well this is... a grim kind of good news? Doesn't explain why they followed orders on Venezuela, which also wasn't authorized by Congress, but it does reassure us somewhat about Greenland, and by extension, Canada. Except it's bananas that we even have to talk about this at all. Also exhausting.

I got a Nexus card when I was doing a book tour in 2024. It made me twitchy to be giving so much info to the US government, but I didn't realize it was also the only option for a verified traveler program if you're traveling within Canada! This really needs to change, wow. Cc @equitableeducation.ca
If Canadians, travelling domestically, want to use the "good" security line at the airport, they need a NEXUS card, even if they aren't going to the US. And they need the blessing of Donald Trump's Homeland Security apparatus to get one. I'm calling on Canada to end this absurdity. #Canada #NEXUS
