My take on CARES or any other relief that goes to anyone other than key Trump constituencies (e.g., farmers) is there’s no universe where it happens under a Mike Johnson-John Thune led Congress so it’s sort of pointless to argue about it.

Take Trump's supporters seriously, but not literally [when they say why they support him] www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...
Tariffs could cost them. They’re still standing by Trump.
Trump’s tariff policy poses a stark test of his ability to defy political gravity, dividing his allies but showcasing the remarkable faith of his die-hard base.

This analysis makes a good case that L.A.'s so-called "Mansion" Tax - which is also levied on the sale of new multifamily housing - kills more than twice the number of rent restricted units as the revenue it generates can support.

Next stop, the governor's desk.

I was joking with a friend that I’m ready to make a deal with MAGA to liberate us from this man if I could figure out what they wanted. Higher taxes for government-funded make-work jobs at the sock factory? Done.

The MTA is now publishing a monthly breakdown of how many vehicles are driving into the Central Business District on average each month compared to the pre-congestion pricing baseline. We're at a 13 percent drop in March, pretty cool metrics.mta.info?cbdtp/vehicl...

Imagine we’re all on a boat in the middle of the ocean. A lot of people are arguing about who has the best seats on the boat, when what Trump is doing is taking the boat itself apart. If the U.S. economy failed, it would hurt everyone - rich and poor, American and not. Everyone.

The endless reservoir of benefit of the doubt we give rich white men is shocking even to me. Anyway, the beatings will continue until we learn something (impossible).

Yes, that’s what is so frustrating about Dem response to tariffs. We can fully lean into free trade now and show the true impact of protectionism. There is no need to cater to union groups that have backed Trump and are continuing to shift right
April 11, 2025 at 6:16 PM
It’s good for big 3 autoworkers to have a seat at the table that full throatedly fights for their interests. But sometimes their interests are at odds with everyone else’s (and not just the “PMC” - poor people. Other unions). It’s okay to admit that.
April 11, 2025 at 6:01 PM
Yeah, this rule went so far as to entirely cancel out the benefit of Biden’s signature policies in many cases (by making it more expensive to do the things they were incentivizing than they were before).
This country wastes so much goddamn money on 'Buy American!' rules and other giveaways to manufacturing unions for literally no return whatsoever

Most important thing is that tariffs are causing GFC #2, but also worth pointing out: if (for example) you put a 10% tariff on Europe and the dollar value declines 10% relative to the Euro as a result, you’re also not getting any financial benefit from the tariff. So… what is the point here?

$5.8T in tax cuts for the wealthy should help with this!
Federal spending is *up* under Trump according to the Wall Street Journal. Chaos is not actually the same as cost savings.

Actual budgeting is a kind of actual policy-making and takes real work spread over real time. Running around breaking stuff isn't that.

IIRC when Oregon passed their rent stabilization bill they found that something like 25% of tenants had had a rent increase of > 10% / year in the past five years.
The "rent stabilization" bill is not a rent stabilization bill, and it's incredibly counterproductive for Democrats in #waleg to refer to it that way.

It's a ban on usurious rent increases.

Do you realize how few landlords raise rent by 10% in a single year? It's not common! Have some perspective.
Washington state Senate raises proposed cap on rent increases from 7% to 10% a year, plus inflation, sending the bill back to the House. Senators approved the change by a single vote on Thursday during tense floor action. #waleg washingtonstatestandard.com/2025/04/10/w...

It also makes a lot more sense than an idiot who is way over his skis somehow failed his way up to gratuitously destroying the global economy.
This isn't a dunk but this isn't surprising to me at all, normies are very conspiracy-brained and "all this was planned so that they could do insider trading!" is extremely up their alley
I see a lot of my normal american friends posting random screenshots about how ta lot of margin calls (or whatever you call it) were placed x minutes before Trump backed down. Many very normal people care about this stuff! It makes them angry!
