Hi new followers!
Following me you get: random thoughts of a junior scholar who is interested in the 16th-17th century Latin America and Caribbean. I write about the Inquisition, prisons, women getting arrested just for living their lives*, and other fun stuff.

I realized over coffee that I will be working I. Europe after the semester ends until my postdoc has run its course.
God and I need to have a chat. What if we have it on the Camino.
Send me your pilgrimage tips.

H-net sent out two courses this summer being held by folks in Spain - intro to the Archive of Simancas and the Archive of the Indies. Simancas remains my favorite place I have worked, such kind archivists in the most beautiful location and a plethora of fascinating documents.

Devastated to learn that Univ of Texas at Austin is closing the American Studies dept. The years I spent there earning my PhD were formative, making me the teacher, thinker, and writer I am today. I've passed on what I learned at UT to thousands of students over the past 20 years. Just awful.

I’m screaming. The morning news is saying Kurt Cobain didn’t really kill himself, that it was a staged suicide.
Like, every grunge kid in the 90s told you so! Hahaha

No one on staff for The Simpsons has ever seen Philly?
Not even a picture?
Just some Instagram level stereotype references?

Happy Valentine’s Day all! ❤️ What could be more romantic than listening to me dragging Hernán Cortés for filth on #YDTM? I had a great time with Jen Brister & @gregjenner.bsky.social & even got to call William Prescott a dirty old man on the BBC 😂 What a result!

Last Valentine’s Day I watched the Eagles victory parade before spending the evening with my soul’s perfect match.
This year, I do not get to do either of those things.
It is bullshit.
I would like to go back to last year please.

🗃️ Tyler Austin Harper’s insane Andrew Mellon Foundation hit piece, which of course @theatlantic.com was happy to print, has rightfully pissed off everyone in the Humanities.

As someone who works in higher education funding, here is a 🧵 on why this article is even more infuriating than you think.
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has become the country’s preeminent funder of humanities research, Tyler Austin Harper writes. Is it saving American arts and letters—or killing them?

Grading my seminar's un-essay proposals and I am going to cry - they are so creative and talented. I don't know why I have never assigned an un-essay before. I cannot wait to see/hear the finished projects.

Let’s do this for the Spanish Empire.

I think we’re in Carlos II territory.
I’ve been carrying on for two years about what stage of Weimar fall/Nazi takeover we’re in. But let’s do something new, shall we? Calling antiquity scholars: what stage of ‘fall of the Roman empire’ are we in?

My students have been studying Aztec codices for weeks and learning about the gods and the migration from Aztlan and different ways of history telling. This section culminated in them painting/drawing the codex of their own migrations to our university.
