'The science select committee should recognise that its remit covers all of research, and conduct an inquiry into the Library, with a view to helping it recover. It could quantify the funding that is needed to properly rebuild the Library’s digital infrastructure'.
I’ve written a piece on the curious lack of media and political interest in the issues faced by our national @britishlibrary.bsky.social. This is strange given we live in a world where ideas, knowledge and research are a long-term source of innovation and insight

The British library is in crisis: why does nobody care?
The widespread indifference to the British Library's crippling cyberattack demonstrates a perilous failure to value the knowledge infrastructure vital for national prosperity

Finally some hope
AI advocates have warned that if every author in the class action filed a claim, it would "financially ruin" the entire industry.
Authors celebrate “historic” settlement coming soon in Anthropic class action
Advocates fear such settlements will “financially ruin” the AI industry.

A 🧵: It was a wild day for D.C. in Congress yesterday, where a House committee advanced 14 bills targeting the city – everything from banning traffic cameras to giving Trump the power to appoint the city's attorney general. I've got a detailed write-up in @51st.news: 51st.news/house-republ...
Cosplaying as D.C. Council, House Republicans advance dozen-plus bills targeting city they don’t represent
The party of limited government is treading heavily on D.C.

Today, Congress is marking up anti-DC bills to:

— Criminalize sleeping in a car

— Prosecute 14-year-olds as adults

— Give Congress a line-item veto of the DC budget

— Force MPD to rehire officers who commit serious crimes

— Let Trump handpick the DC Attorney General with no Senate confirmation

These are all the Independence Park exhibits that could be removed by the Trump administration next month
Under an executive order by President Donald Trump, the displays could be removed in the next month.

Burchett represents Tennessee. Over the last few years, Nashville, Memphis, and Chattanooga have all had higher crime rates than D.C.

Knoxville, where Burchett was mayor, is lower, but still among the most violent 10 percent of cities in the country.
Tim Burchett says he lives in his office in DC because he's scared of crime in the city

the analysis in here from people living in encampments is more incisive and direct than a lot of the coverage from national media streetsensemedia.org/article/home...
Donald Trump threatens to clear encampments in D.C.
With D.C.’s MPD now under federal control and the National Guard coming to D.C., the fate of people in encampments remains up in the air.

This will make it harder for groups like the @ACLU.org to organize public comment campaigns. Cutting off this access limits organizing power and is another step in a wave of anti-democratic, techno-fascist measures.

Super helpful analysis here:
Congress has given the President the power to take control of the D.C. local police for up to 30 days "for federal purposes," and to deploy the (tiny) D.C. National Guard.

As today's "One First" explains, that's the full extent of what the President can do to "federalize" D.C. without new statutes:
172. "Federalizing" D.C.
Like any federal enclave, the federal government has plenary power over the District of Columbia. But Congress has delegated most of that power to local officials; it would take new laws to undo that.

A LOT of Americans don't understand that "public funding" streams back into enriching their communities. They scream about their tax dollars being used for handouts without realizing that's what's been keeping every small business in their whole town afloat.
All those people who say that the US university system is just a bunch of cultural Marxists divorced from the needs of the nation are about to find out how wrong they are. (It is many things, which is really good, and many of them are not market-driven, which is also good. But still.)
The US could see a 30-40% decline in new international student enrollment, resulting in nearly $7 billion in lost revenue and more than 60,000 fewer American jobs. https://www.nafsa.org/fall-2025-international-student-enrollment-outlook-and-economic-impact

There's something really interesting going on here methodologically in Justice Jackson's Medina v. Planned Parenthood dissent. You can see it in one footnote.

In short, Jackson is emphasizing that Black Americans are part of the original "public" about which "originalists" should be concerned.
