My protagonist is undead! Their body has been Frankensteined but they’ve also been saddled with a regenerative ability that keeps trying to restore life to them but doesn’t quite seem to know *how,* especially with so many old pieces missing, and new pieces to account for.

Necroharmony, aura pressed against aura, his engulfing mine like a predatory amoeba. I am inside his willpower and it is peeling back the layers of mine. I should be furious. I should be in full fight-or-flight right now, that he’d cast and put me under his thrall to maintain an upper hand he was in no danger of losing. But I can’t muster those emotions, though gods, I try. Save for his command, I am frozen. My ears are not meekly flattened down, they’re up, attentive, emotionlessly obedient. “Clearly, Merion, I need to spell it out for you, that the simplest, easiest course of action to ensure the void siphon does not fall into the wrong hands would be to ask that you rip it still-beating from your own chest for me. And at this moment, you would. And then I would just have to clean up whatever resulting mess comes after; I know all about the way you get.” I have no secrets. I have no advantage, no device, no escape. This is a hatchet to my ribs in essence, its sharpness just as undeniable as the wrath behind it. He continues, “But I do not particularly like that approach. Do you like it? Would you prefer that?” I take a moment to determine whether or not I’m in control of myself again. When I shake my head, it’s of my own volition, but I’m all too aware of my powerlessness here.

“I saw a dead body today,” she confessed. “There was a murder. I just met her this morning, really nice person, and then this afternoon…” She shook her head, trying to work the trauma out. The three women looked at her with varying levels of sympathy. “Damn,” offered Deebs. “That’s heavy. I’m sorry.” Talia shrugged. Brace reached out to pat her hand. It had felt good to say it, even though it brought the mood down. Amy took a gulp of her fourth pint and pursed her lips sadly, then lifted her glass in silent salute to the dead stranger. They all drank the nonverbal toast. There wasn’t anything else to say, so they sat in silent contemplation for a minute or two. “So this mysterious contact you sent over…” Brace changed the subject, finally getting down to the business at hand. Amy smirked unnecessarily. Brace leaned her elbows on the cracked table and ducked in slightly for some sub-rosa revelations. “It was terribly tricky, this little assignment, Talia,” Brace began, her voice hushed, “Required the steady hands of expert spelunkers. You were lucky to have contacted us…” “We Googled it,” Amy interrupted, without looking up from her beer, just wiping away the foam head from her lip. Brace mocked disappointment that her punch-line had been stolen. “Well, not exactly Google, but it was a pretty straightforward search,” Deebs “Do you want to see them?” “What?” “The remains?” Talia felt a little guilty at her rush of childlike glee at the mention of being permitted to see what amounted to a corpse, but of course she wanted to see the bones! She didn’t even have to say a word. He led her to a far corner in another room divided from the main area by a heavy plastic curtain. “I’ll show you the female,” he said, allowing her into the space and looking for another key on his set. “Victorian era biases about gender roles have plagued archaeology for generations, worldwide,” he began, bringing up a common point of complaint amongst contemporary archeologists… a point with which Talia was familiar and sympathized. “Historically, in many cases, the presence of weapons in a grave was automatically thought to indicate a male burial, without the skeletal remains, if there were any, even being fully examined. The reverse has also been true, with some burials containing male remains being described as warriors, despite an absence of weaponry.” “More recent examinations of the evidence have highlighted these faulty notions. Bones once thought to be male merely due to the presence of war-like grave goods have been shown to be female in a not insignificant number of cases. Equally, male burials are less frequently assumed to be warriors by default. And that’s not even taking into consideration the gender identities of the buried individuals within their culture. And she enjoyed it—the weight of a sword in her hand, the rush of vitality when it was her against ghastly odds, the ecstasy of triumph. But it had never felt like this.She danced amidst the bewildered horde, shawl flapping, sandals raising bloodied dust and scoria, tendrils of hair coming out of the bun to whip at the smile wavering on her lips. Datusha radiated, blinding and lethal, singing a song of freedom with each swing, every slain demon multiplying its glow.
