Kilmarnock-born Edinburgher, civil servant who likes a lot of music, niche trivia and funny stuff
Both of these imdb Goofs about anachronistic blank cassette tapes were submitted by me; there's no doubt others on the site that I've long forgotten about. Call Me By Your Name (set in 1983), and Super 8 (set in 1979)

Arrived today: Noiz Invaders, a playable Atari 2600 cartridge by Idiotbox Games- it's Space Invaders but the aliens are instead the symbols from industrial/noise bands (Coil, Psychic TV, The Residents, etc). We thought the music was also to be reimagined but the sound of each we played was normal.

We've just put it on too, for about the fourth time in as many months, if there's anything 90s Sigourney Weaver inspires it's copycat behaviour
I'm gonna watch this tonight because It's called being a copy cat

This morning's more bracing out & about music, for a more invigorating windy day. This is still my go-to B Minor, a kind of happy medium between the gigantism of the 60s/70s and the HIP era which I always find doesn't give it quite enough welly. The first Kyrie should always sound like judgement day

Good news: The Ice Storm is now on BFI player, and you should all watch it asap

Bad news: We've watched it too recently elsewhere, so Showgirls is on instead, which, for reasons best known to the BFI curators, is now there too

First out and about music of 2026: popped to the shops on a clear, mild January day with the flawless first 12 minutes of Bregenz, was exactly the mood boost I needed, no notes

This has gone up on the ECM site, releasing 30th Jan - do like Hülsmann, but not sure if this is my cup of tea... might pick it up, depending on what else appears, and the Taborn's a definite for this month
While I Was Away - ECM Records
Hülsmann’s compositions always have great respect for melody that lends depth and an enduring quality to her finest work, which with every addition to her ECM discography, keeps growing.  – Jazzwise M...

Last Stockbridge Oxfam haul of 2025: never change with the putting jazz albums in the rock & pop racks, folks (the Burton this time), I do love the hunt. Possibly already have the Górecki, but can never resist an Argo in good nick

Just had this on, a film about Bill Pullman being more loveable and less bad tempered (as well as objectively hotter) than Tom Hanks, what the fuck are you doing Meg Ryan

I am begging everyone on here to read this new post by Bryan Johnson — the super rich tech guy who is now doing the “never die” protocol.

I need to talk about it with you all.

This is true and I was the only one on set excited about it (and playing the song on my phone to blank stares)
Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up.

I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

Could: Jamie Sives
Couldn't: Michael McIntyre
name a celebrity you think could efficiently pull the all the meat off a rotisserie chicken and one you think couldn't
I think a powerful short film would be Judi Dench eating an entire rotisserie chicken with her bare hands
