I gave my students a very impassioned plea against using AI for their work at the beginning of this semester. Now some of their major assignments are coming in, and not only is their work coming up clean on every AI detector, it's also very good stuff. There's hope out there.

AI has not gotten even close to annihilating the profession of radiology as predicted.

Are paintings art? They’re just rectangles of arranged pigments capturing thoughts, emotions, beauty, and truth. I mean, they’re fun to look at but “art” I dunnow

One study found that “AI coding tools actually made software developers slower, despite expectations to the contrary, because they had to spend time checking for and correcting errors made by the AI”

AI-Generated “Workslop” Is Destroying Productivity
Despite a surge in generative AI use across workplaces, most companies are seeing little measurable ROI. One possible reason is because AI tools are being used to produce “workslop”—content that appea...

Humble request for @gavinnewsom.bsky.social: Please take a little break from vetoing pro-worker legislation
These bills are not radical. Whether or he signs them will reveal a lot about the possibilities of legislating AI in California, and beyond. Newsom has after all vetoed pro-worker and risk-mitigating AI bills in the past, siding with Silicon Valley over unions and AI safety groups alike.

This is happening because there's a famous quote about AI being good that's attributed to Lynch. I think a rule one could take from this is that it's ghoulish to use a recently dead person as a mascot because you have a hunch they would agree with you. Lot's of potential applications for this...
this led me into a horrifying rabbit hole where I found another community where Lynch serves as an avatar for "Pro-AI" artists

It’s ok to be a pseudo-Luddite and, for instance, distrust smartphones. But it’s important to be an actual Luddite while you’re at it
Here's your period reminder that "Luddite" does not mean "hates technology/progress".

It means "hates how technology/progress benefit only the bosses while the workers get the shaft".
Protests, mass meetups, conferences—a youth-led movement is reclaiming the Luddite mantle, rejecting a future dominated by Silicon Valley companies, toxic apps, and generative AI.

This fall, a "Luddite renaissance" is in full swing.

It's been my hobby theory for a bit now that ChatGPT spells the death of search traffic, which is catastrophic news for media outlets and ecommerce companies that don't have a dedicated sales team.

Readers visit Substack intentionally, not through search. You're not stumbling on a Substack article.

I am on my last year on fashion school, it’s dreadful when companies are turning down beauty artists and paying less to models to use their bodies, but the institution encouraging us to use it and rewarding students who do AI editorials and sketches are the absolutely worst
Freelance illustration gigs drying up. Ad agencies using Midjourney instead of hiring human artists. Costume design turned over to AI wholesale. Good work vanishing.

These are the stories of working visual artists, who describe losing jobs, wages, and hope as their clients and bosses embrace AI.

Especially Michael Shannon, my favorite actor, but ALL actors negatively affected by AI are more than welcome to tell their stories: @aikilledmyjob.bsky.social

This. At one job we had, the whole art department was slashed down to 1 person overnight cause or AI. I was also removed

funny thing is, they ended up using none of their ai-generated designs and still kept using my concept art until the very end 🥹. It’s crazy

Whenever someone questions market impacts of GenAi, show them this article.

Make them read each heart breaking story.

People’s livelihoods are being negatively impacted, by a tech that relied on the work of those same people to function at capacity.

The whole thing makes me sick.
