I've always positioned optimism as in "everything will be fine" against hope which is "if we show up and do our utmost there is a chance." But those words mean different things to different people. What's striking is how many safe & comfortable people want to give up while the most endangered fight.

I had shingles once, caught it early so it was fairly mild. By mild, I mean it felt like my skin was on fire. I don’t know why anyone would want to risk it when there’s a vaccine that can spare you that.

Montgomery County first made its “Ride On” buses free to all riders under 18 in 2019. Then on June 29, 2025, it made all of its buses fare-free for all passengers. The system has a fleet of nearly 400 buses, 80 routes, and provided 19.2 million rides in the 2025 fiscal year.
