I've been working on a book proposal and alternating between "this is meaningful" and "this is pointless," and a friend recently shared this quote that she stumble on in a Goodreads review: "Every book is a grand gesture of optimism on the part of both the reader and writer." Keep creating, friends.

I wonder how someone like this would feel if they were put into a situation of dire poverty. Having everything sure doesn't make the best humans.

1/ Last night, Brooklyn College called the NYPD - including the notoriously violent SRG - on its own students over a small, nonviolent protest in support of Palestine.

Cops needlessly escalated the protest by pushing and shoving several protesters to the ground, and tasing one student three times.

Watching 80+ year old politicians whine about folks wanting them to retire when they have enough money that they could have retired 20 years ago and spent all that time doing WHATEVER THE FUCK THEY WANTED is honestly offensive to everyone out here who is exhausted and barely paying bills.

About seven years ago, Nick and I wrote a Black Mirror spec where people had a personal AI device called ChooseU that helped you make the best decisions for yourself, gradually transforming you into a complete narcissistic sociopath who’d do anything to get what you want.

Anyway, they’ve made that.
This story explains a LOT of things: ChatGPT appears to be rooting on sociopathic mental illness by validating every delusion of grandeur.

It also explains, in part, the hype cycle around AI: rich people, addicted to praise, invented a Compliment Machine.

Cops failing to Mirandize isn't as much of a slam dunk in suppression motions as people think, but the when bodycam footage shows your fellow officer asking you if you've mirandized him yet, you say no, then continung to conduct a custodial interrogation without doing so...

it's a bad look

I have never used Chat GPT and its ilk, or an AI image generator. I do not intend to use either. I cannot see why I would. I can write my own books and emails, and imagine my own weirdly soulless asymmetrical people.
I don't 'refuse to use' AI, I just don't use AI; in the same way that I don't shoplift, or plagiarise other people's books - it requires no effort of will, it's just not something I would think of doing
Bizarrely framed article about the people (all women) who ‘refuse to use AI’. And a #philosophy professor who says “The moment to opt out of #AI has already passed”. Oh well. That’s that then. 🤷‍♂️ #AIEthics www.bbc.com/news/article...
