What a deal!
The EU has "agreed to spend hundreds of billions of dollars on additional US energy products and weapons, in exchange for the broad 15 per cent levy that covers many European exports including cars."
Not a misprint. Unthinkable during my lifetime. But this is 2025.

That is fantastic news, congrats everyone involved!

Despite concerns over data, I still need to be convinced the core ideas of these papers are wrong.

Colonial Origins, Atlantic Traders, and Reversal of Fortunes. These studies are important not because they’re flawless, but because they conveyed novel insights and convinced economists that history matters. That’s what great research does, even if it’s later challenged.

Thanks to AJR, an entire line of research into long-run development has emerged over the past 20 years. I probably wouldn’t be in academia without their pioneering work. Every year, I tell my students this when we cover their landmark papers:
🚨CALL FOR PAPERS🚨 Technology and Long-Term Development: Lessons from the Past. When? June 12-13, 2025. Where? València (Spain). Keynotes: Luigi Pascali and Bruno Caprettini #EconSky #Econhist
