New Working Paper with the amazing @korntob.bsky.social : tinyurl.com/CESifoWPLocal.

It is also my first CESifo Working Paper.

In short: We study "local reallocation": the exit of some workers from production even though employment increases in the same area and industry.

A short explanation 👇
How is regional loss of manufacturing jobs linked to populism? In a new paper in @pvs-journal.bsky.social, @mbayerlein.bsky.social, Anne Metten & I find that industrial decline in Germany shapes electoral support for left-wing rather than far-right populist parties.
A thread. 🧵👇 shorturl.at/RIjCr
Industrial Employment and Populism in Germany—Exploring the Effect of Actual and Looming Decline - Politische Vierteljahresschrift
The regional decline of manufacturing employment is frequently linked to the rise of right-wing populism in many Western countries. Surprisingly, contributions that directly examine the relationship b...

Key findings:
1️⃣ Half of West German labor markets saw a “reversal of fortune” from 1926–2019.
2️⃣ Early industrialization spurred development but became a liability after WWII.
3️⃣ It created a lopsided economic structure dominated by large firms, limiting adaptability and innovation.

Thrilled to see our paper “Reversing Fortunes of German Regions, 1926–2019” published in the Journal of Economic Growth!

Shows that 19th-c. industrialization was a key driver of the shifts in regional prosperity across Germany over the past century.

Devastating news at IZA yesterday. More than 25 years of hard work, earned reputation, and valuable institutional knowledge and public good provision wiped out with a single stroke. It’s hard to find the words.
Devastating news that @iza.org is effectively closing down 😔

It was (or at the moment, is) a wonderful institute and the network was tremendously helpful in dissaminating work in labour economics.

IZA will sorely be missed 😢

So sorry for all IZA employees!
