In just over eight months, Berlin will hold its 20th state election since 1946. While its well known East West divide in voting behaviour is often attributed to the city’s former split into capitalist and socialist halves, these differences existed even before the city’s division. A thread. 🧵

I find it odd that academics strongly believe in the power of specialization, yet quality assessment at academic journals still relies on “peer review” rather than on professional, full-time reviewers.

The Ruhrgebiet, once Europe’s largest industrial region, mined coal from the 13th century. By 1956 it employed almost half a million people, but within two decades the workforce had shrunk by two thirds. The last mine closed in 2018.

The urban-rural divide contains a within-generation divide: It is the younger, not the older generations, who are polarized by their place of residence.
New Publication with @lhaffert.bsky.social in @ejprjournal.bsky.social!

We study the role of generations in the urban-rural divide, which is increasingly shaping the politics of many democracies.

Studying Switzerland, we show: The urban-rural divide is stronger among younger generations. (1/10) 🧵👇
