#unanimity
NOW: Voting is underway on the shutdown deal in the House. So far, dems Gluesenkamp Perez, Adam Gray, and Jared Golden have voted yes. So the dems couldn't get unanimity on this in the House, either.

“Not since the civil rights era — and never with such unanimity — have American bishops so directly challenged a president’s policies.”
“Meeting at their annual conference in Baltimore, the bishops voted 216-5 (with three abstentions) to approve a ‘Special Message’ on immigration — the first such action in 12 years.

After the overwhelming vote, the assembly of bishops stood and applauded, underscoring the moment’s importance.”
BREAKING: At Pope Leo XIV’s urging, U.S. Catholic bishops just delivered the strongest rebuke of a sitting president in Church history — condemning Trump-Vance raids as “inhumane” and “dehumanizing” in a 216–5 vote.

Hold on a minute. There may not be unanimity but I don't think it's in doubt that most CoE countries at least let us use the right loos. Is he really saying "but Hungary"

I am not a historian of USCCB stuff myself *but* I am told this kind of unanimity on a statement like this is basically unprecedented, and the last time it was even close was in the 1960s with civil rights.

Peter Whish-Wilson
Tasmanian Greens Senator

I don't think he was trying to raise doubt. I think he was taking the opportunity to get actual scientists to confirm that 'consensus' does not require unanimity.

A sticking point for shitheads like Roberts.

The US Conference of Catholic Bishops voted overwhelmingly for a rare message condemning Trump's "indiscriminate mass deportations." One writer noted that "never with such unanimity... have American bishops so directly challenged a president’s policies."

Quakers make some group decisions by consensus and that's not the same thing as unanimity.

Don’t try to be cute. You know exactly who needs to go.

But, I’ll be explicit: The Dem “leaders” who failed to whip their caucus into unanimity on an issue as important as this shutdown shouldn’t be in leadership any longer.

Lots of people in the EU want to change this, but that requires unanimity, and it keeps getting blocked.

The EU plans to ensure the loan to Ukraine through EU countries' guarantees and, in a second step, through a guarantee in the next EU budget, which would require unanimity. But other options, such as direct grants to Ukraine, are considered even less politically feasible. /5

It also adds the problem that any process requiring unanimity is easy to defeat - just never agree to an appointment.

And then the Dems would have been better positioned to blame Republicans for healthcare costs. And the elimination of the filibuster, necessary if we are ever to restore our democracy after 2028 and unlikely to get unanimity in the Democratic senate caucus, would have been accomplished.

COP30🇧🇷 is here. Your yearly reminder that

- COPs are not single shots; each is part of a process.
- yes there’ll be winners and losers and yes there are more losers when we host them in a unanimity based body dominated by fossil fuels.
- I’d rather have world in which COPs force us to talk climate.

It’s bad but its a feature of EU deciding climate ambition by consensus, backtracking is certainly happening and it has something to do with Trump but this is just old fashioned unanimity holding EU back
Now official - the EU has weakened its planned 2040 emissions reduction target at the insistence of national governments.

It is part of the overall story of Europe backtracking on its goals to fight climate change - party because of Trump pressure, partly because of changing public attitudes.
EU countries agree weakened 2040 climate goal and target for COP30
The deal avoids the EU going empty handed to the COP30 climate summit starting on Nov. 10.

No way the EU member states would agree about UK re-entering on the old conditions. Its candidature would have to follow the same process as any other candidate. Membership would require unanimity amongst the existing members states. Every parliament in member states may block the process.

There is a means, but it required unanimity among other countries.

Putin's strategy was all wrong. He should have love bombed the EU and joined it.

No, it was opposed by a third of the House and a fourth of the Senate. You are confusing it for the AUMF after 9/11, which was one vote short of unanimity.

It’s ironic that European FP doves are so against an EU army, given how restrained it would likely be?

National armies can act unilaterally. France fucking around in west Africa, or the UK joining US invasions in the Middle East.

Imagine an army that needed EUCO unanimity to scratch its nose!

The “value of human life” has been devalued so many times in my life.

Used to make movies about dozens of highly trained dudes dying to save an “innocent life,” that made millions of dollars and won Oscars. Moral unanimity.

Now it’s “not cost effective” to offer life-saving care.

This ends badly
I think it helps to think of Fascism as the only possible endpoint for capitalism that’s allowed to regulate itself. All the incentives lead to systematic brutality.
