#pohutukawa
In this new chapter, I look forward to enjoying a slower pace of life and simple pleasures: bush walks and beaches galore, Pohutukawa trees in bloom, feijoas, mild weather, and time with my parents. 2/2

Wrapping up with some birds from Canada and one naturalized NZ bird. #birds

I can step out my front door and walk to the beach, or the forest, or the park.

December photos post. The number of photos I put on my post pages keeps on increasing, but there are some photos that I really like here.

So far in January I've done 1 set of 91 photos, so January's post might be slim.

First bird for #BirdArtWeek2026 / #BirdsWithWhimsy is a tūī in a pōhutukawa! I loved them so much when I was in NZ a couple of months ago!

More info about this painting on my blog.

Painted with Holbein acryla gouache on a 4x4 in. wood coaster.

This weather brought our camping trip to an abrupt end! I’d checked the forecast when we went to bed at 11pm and it was for light rain!

It is raining hard in Wellington and the air smells of damp earth and vegetation with a touch of sweetness from the remaining pōhutukawa blossoms. The resident fantail pair have been fluttering around the trees off my deck squeaking while dive bombing insects. It's a lovely morning.

Pōhutukawa is a lovely tree to remember Sig by.
January 14, 2026 at 6:33 PM
Anyone have a suggestion for what tree I should plant on Sig? Jax has her self-seeded kōwhai & tī kōuka & I gave Pax a pōhutukawa. I was thinking another pōhutukawa, but anyone got any other ideas?

"Three quarters of our endemic terrestrial bird, freshwater fish and frog species are now either at risk or threatened with extinction; 9 in 10 native seabird and reptile species sit in the same category; and around half of our native vascular plants – including pōhutukawa – are also under threat."

I feel there's an entry in @theobrominated.bsky.social book somewhere that would enlighten us.

Not even sure if they're southern Rata or Pōhutukawa

Pohutukawa on Steroids!
January 12, 2026 at 5:34 AM
Maybe I should have gone with:
I was driving through Auckland in late January
On a day hot enough to make the pohutukawa weary
January 11, 2026 at 7:15 AM
ah the beautiful sounds of a NZ summer holiday at the beach. Waves crashing on the sand, tuis singing in the pohutukawa, the soft sound of cricket on the neighbors tv. And every five minutes (usually just as I’ve picked up the book i want to read): “Daddy I’m bored”.
January 11, 2026 at 3:45 AM
Yep
Plant the right tree for the right space

Our Kowhai and Totara are perfect for most urban spaces (mind the Tui)
Rimu and Beach get interesting
Pohutukawa are fine but destroy your infrastructure like pipes pissing off Watercare

Kanuka if you let it will become a 20m high tree
January 11, 2026 at 12:30 AM
Pohutukawa and eucalyptus are good that way
January 10, 2026 at 9:42 PM
Two things: picture doesn’t capture the intense redness of this pōhutukawa flowering; the low cloud means that when I head out for my run it will be like soup - which is why I’m procrastinating

pōhutukawa strewn path through the writhing lawn this morning
January 10, 2026 at 12:21 AM
Oh good point, I hadn't considered pōhutukawa as well. They're not locally native but there are still plenty around.
January 9, 2026 at 7:20 PM
Once the Pōhutukawa stopped flowering we started getting them wanting sugar water again, particularly after a few days of bad weather
