A jet-black American crow at Canada Place in Vancouver, slightly obscured by some railings. In most places that are not NZ, these are cormorants. They spread their wings to dry them. This one is all black, by the edge of the water, and there is another one next to it. An unidentified juvenile gull perching on an edge. It's more grey and less white than an adult. A starling that's been feeding on flowers. It's among a bunch of red pōhutukawa blooms, and is otherwise blue and black, except that its face is full of yellow powder.

I can step out my front door and walk to the beach, or the forest, or the park.
Summer sunrise, early in the morning. The sky is orange, Mount Vic is visible in the background, and a pōhutukawa is to the left. Island Bay and Taputeranga Island are on the Cook Strait on the southern end of Wellington. This picture is taken from a walking track, but there are houses below. The large grassy field of Karori Park in foreground, with small hills and houses in background, underneath a mostly sunny sky with a line-shaped cloud. An eel (tuna) swims in Otari-Wilton's Bush, if I remember correctly. It's a black creature in a dark green stream. There are some branches in the foreground, which are definitely not a beaver dam.

So far in January I've done 1 set of 91 photos, so January's post might be slim.
Bright red pōhutukawa blooms from mid-December in Wellington. Some leaves, but mostly red. Smooth streams of water on the Old Ghost Road falling over rocky bands, with some round rocks below and some greenery around. Lake Angelus from near the summit of Angelus Peak. This was the last picture with GPS coordinates, before I dropped my phone. Seattle in December 2023. There is a ferris wheel to the left, a brilliantly-lit boat near shore, and many skyscrapers along the water.

First bird for #BirdArtWeek2026 / #BirdsWithWhimsy is a tūī in a pōhutukawa! I loved them so much when I was in NZ a couple of months ago!

This weather brought our camping trip to an abrupt end! I’d checked the forecast when we went to bed at 11pm and it was for light rain!

Golden Tōtara bonsai forest with pōhutukawa understorey and fern like ground cover leptinella. Along the range at the back is lonicera nitida on a line of rocks. A toy aircraft is wedged into the lowest right branch of the lead tree and a rock hut is tot the left of the second tree. Planted in a dark earth coloured oval pot with light clay top band of colour. It is raining hard in Wellington and the air smells of damp earth and vegetation with a touch of sweetness from the remaining pōhutukawa blossoms. The resident fantail pair have been fluttering around the trees off my deck squeaking while dive bombing insects. It's a lovely morning.

Anyone have a suggestion for what tree I should plant on Sig? Jax has her self-seeded kōwhai & tī kōuka & I gave Pax a pōhutukawa. I was thinking another pōhutukawa, but anyone got any other ideas?

Our Kowhai and Totara are perfect for most urban spaces (mind the Tui)
Rimu and Beach get interesting
Pohutukawa are fine but destroy your infrastructure like pipes pissing off Watercare
