#photorealism
a photorealism study with ashe. sometimes i just like to wing it and merge all layers and then overpaint everything on the canvas. like this picture for example i just do very minimal lineart/sketch, and just paint everything else. it's much more fun but can get a little time consuming down the line

In 1970, Chuck Close unveiled Big Self-Portrait, using a grid-based method to recreate a photograph at monumental scale. The work became a landmark of Photorealism, challenging ideas of realism, process, and the role of photography in painting. #ArtHistory

We need less photorealism and more stylized games
January 5, 2026 at 3:51 PM
A beautiful explanation of the power of stylized visuals in defiance of trends which hold photorealism as the sole means to convey "maturity" and "intellectual/commercial value." The ability to render imagery that goes beyond what merely exists is not just a creative exercise, but an entire language

My very simple tech list:

-I want to be able to repair my PC.

-High-end PC parts should be affordable for all.

-I want developers to learn how to optimize their games again.

-I want an inspired art style, not photorealism.

-I DONT FUCKING WANT AI. #PopTheBubble

Photorealism

tbf a lot of indie and solo-dev'ed games have you peeing nowadays too. and a good good chunk of them was made in unity. but the real good ones also let you wash your hands after

(this, while photorealism is the bane of my existence)

isnt i crazy how we have all this suppposed photorealism now but how many games do you actually have to make ur character go pee?

Even if they weren't that professional every song with a piano sound prior to automated sample sequencing necessarily had to have a player of pianos involved in the process. CG art takes effort, but if you have enough money you can just demand photorealism and avoid any artistic decisions

Test 2: Photorealism

Elderly scientist, Rembrandt lighting.

Looks like a real photograph.

like yeah photorealism is bullshit and things should be accessible but it's ok for some things to be resource intensive if they make good use of said resources

He would, even with the irony here being the photorealism and accuracy, proving that he literally IS as pretty and that it's not up for debate.

The puppets have me excited in ways photorealism could never.

Oh I’ve found colored pencils to be extremely challenging tho I use them for doodling. I’m mostly doing graphite (it’s erasable!) when I’m trying to get something right. The entire technique they teach for CP (online at least) doesn’t appeal to me. It’s all photorealism and drawing in tiny layers

It's also crazy how I think the RE engine makes the models look worse by prioritizing photorealism but that's OK cause everything happening in the game is still so visually absurd it doesn't matter as much.

After I posted the Midjourney image on Sunday I noticed the eyelashes were black instead of red, auburn or light colour. Here I tried to correct the image in OpenAI Sora and Gemini Nano Banana Pro.

Which one looks more natural?

Stylized motion and appearance NEVER look wrong because they’re intentional… but photorealism is a bottomless sinkhole with ever-decreasing returns. The results are ghoulish at best. AAA games are wasting time and money chasing that dumb goal.
