honestly, I LOVED isekai from decades ago cuz it leaned on the magic of the world rather than just the characters having powers. So it's more like the modern isekai are just sloppy cuz they stopped being about the setting and more about being an overpowered self-insert...

I know there's probably whole genres of literature on the subject but isn't this just such a perfect encapsulation of "whiteness" as a concept?

My favorite fantasy worlds are Rayman and Zeno Clash exclusively because they actually pushed out beyond this "Lord of the Rings" fantasy and made something off the wall. Our imaginations can create anything but for some reason it's all just alternate names for "elves" "orcs" and "zombies"
I would add one more crucial detail here: "Isekai Slop" as a concept has existed for a decade+, and even then it was drawing on an IDENTICAL formula to the one described below,so if you're thinking of writing anything, of any genre, start with the thought "I REFUSE to make a boilerplate fantasy RPG"
side note: I feel like this is what isekai slop doesn't understand and why it fails to be interesting 99% of the time.
Cuz they use isekai as "another world" (which usually means "not Japanese high school") yet it's the exact same RPG setting every time. There's no "other" world to explore.

I think James Cameron has gotten a lot of narrative kudos over the years when his actual strength is picking a dead simple story that he can put into the most intricately imagined world he can make on whatever budget he has.

Some part of the back of my mind says I've heard some exceptions to this but the vast VAST majority of the *male* loneliness discussion is really people complaining about how being *antisocial* makes you lonely, and like... yeah. No shit. Match + gas = fire, what did you think would happen?
