Made it a lot cheaper to just have teachers say "oh yeah that's Russia now." The textbooks that were old would be expensive to replace, so it's more financially convenient to just pretend reality doesn't change. We get locked into tech stacks because switching is expensive when you can do it at all.

Tbh it kind of makes me reflect on the mechanisms of fascism, because if I think about it that school was pretty well-funded, but those maps were part of this big, likely-expensive assembly that wasn't modular in a way that made it easy to change out a map.

Tangential, but thinking about how my elementary school in the early 2000s still had maps at the front of every classroom with "USSR" instead of "Russia"
