Parklets playing urban Tetris with bike lanes.
January 2, 2026 at 11:03 AM
The pro-car bias is real, as is the anti-bike bias.

One of the oddities leftover from the pandemic are the often unregulated parklets, which I've documented creating bike lane hazards all over the SF Bay Area (e.g. blocking the bike lane or parklets that are cut off from the curb by the bike lane).

Locally we're having some heated discussions about exactly this. Our city is too small to eat up space for this kind of "urbanization" or "gentrification" and trying to bring the big city to our rural home. We ate up parking during the pandemic with the "parklets" and well, um...nope.

Ready for the return of curb thoughts from my ward’s AC Transit director!

In ~2018 we had energy around curb data standards, shared street data, pulling usage stats out of the ZIRPed-up mobility companies, and city enforcement. COVID parklets pushed that forward, we should bring it back.
“The good news is that the city already owns an asset worth at least that much every single year, which we simply give away. We walk past it every day: the curb.”
“Pairing free buses with paid parking says we value people in motion more than cars at rest,” writes Nicolas Rohatyn.

The SFCTA plan does approach some of these problems. They attempt to address the consistent inbound N blockage at 9th and Irving with a curb extension. Currently, drivers regularly illegally park in front of commercial parklets between 9th and 8th on Irving, blocking the N.

Philly did the same thing with the intentionally astronomical permit fees post-pandemic and all but the fanciest/$$$ restaurants scrapped their dining parklets. Beyond criminal.
December 14, 2025 at 9:57 PM
Yeah, because the city recently jacked up the fees for parklets to an absurdly unaffordable rate.

This is outside Monzu, the best italian restaurant in San Diego. This small family run business had one of the best parklets in the city and allowed them to triple their seating capacity.

That has been replaced by 2 parking spots. How is maximizing car parking at all costs good for small business?

We have to get every single resident to sign off before installing a bike lane.

But ending Al Fresco dining in the city with the best year round weather in the world is done without public input.

Just to return a handful of parking spots/maintain dangerous freeway style multi-lane one way streets.

ICYMI: Ever heard of a grätzloase? It means “neighbourhood oasis”– a miniature park replacing a parking space, aka parklets. With the blessing of city hall, more than 100 of them have sprung up across Vienna since 2015. And in theory, anyone in Vienna can build one.
‘Why would you take away a parking place?’: the city where anyone can build an urban oasis
Grätzloasen – low-cost, urban ‘parklets’ built by volunteers – are on the rise in Vienna as sceptics are being won over by the splash of welcome greenery and boost to community spirits

Instead of reverting to parking, this space will become a mixture of parklets, streateries, loading zones, and bike infrastructure. This is a smart plan that keeps street space activated for people & the needs of the businesses on 18th.

DDOT’s removing streateries this week in Adams Morgan–space that could be used for wider sidewalks, parklets, bike/scooter parking & new streateries if desired. I shared these concerns & DDOT has agreed to hold a 10’ curbside area for these/other public uses. brianneknadeau.com/18th-street-...

Barring any back-room high jinks or an act of God, we should soon see a casino at the Queens Aqueduct, the Bally’s golf club in the Bronx, and Steve Cohen’s megaproject next to Citi Field, where parking lots will be turned into parklets; concert halls; and a glassy, Hard Rock–branded tower. (AP).

Seemingly, those stones were relocated multiple times but finally protected a lot of trees like bollards. According to the video locals of all ages appreciated their new "parklets".

Checking out the Valencia St bike lane. Unbelievable how much drama there was to get a parking protected bike lane here. More bikes and scooters have passed us than cars and there's still plenty of space for car parking, parklets and 2 travel lanes.

It's the same in Limerick where they're removing the parklets, to provide a few extra car parking spaces, only for businesses to close down so there's fewer people wanting to park anyway

I saw this sign in the distance on my walk on the Dublin Road tonight and was interested to see what it was advertising.
Parking spaces. 9,000 parking spaces.
Is that the best Limerick has to offer people? We really needed to remove those parklets to add a few more 🫤
