On this day in 1541, the notorious provocateur Francois Rabelais published the book that became central to the Enlightenment. It was the third installment of his five-volume series "Gargantua and Pantagruel."

Whenever Rabelais comes up, it can be useful to ask how did he infuriate the Church, academia, or both… this time? His ideas were often radical and obscene, but it was his satire that really irritated religious and intellectual authorities. The first two books in the Gargantua and Pantagruel series used the main characters – a giant and his son – to point out the absurdities of 16th Century French life. The third book – published on this day – pivoted in a way that still resonates throughout literature and story telling. Instead of writing another volume of grotesque humor, Rabelais got philosophical. The characters started asking existential questions – often around marriage, a largely theological institution that – then, as now – was a rich target for satire. But Rabelais wrote of sustained intellectual inquiry: his characters constantly asked tough questions. Also then, as now, questioning people about rigid social systems quickly becomes awkward and often nasty. In the book, the answers from everyone – priests, professors, knaves, and fools – are ambiguous or contradictory. And this book did more than any of its predecessors to show that the absolute certainty claimed by religious and academic authorities didn’t exist. And then Rabelais made another truly radical move: he revealed the all-too-human vulnerability of his characters. They were at times anxious, manipulative, and self-deceiving. Readers clearly saw themselves and the institutions that controlled their lives and saw that the meaning imposed by those authorities was profoundly lacking. By sowing doubt in authoritarian institutions and showing how official interpretations were subjective and usually capricious, Rabelais pointed to a third way: freedom. To be sure, it was a cantankerous freedom, difficult to achieve and extremely delicate. But that was – and remains – an honest description of freedom. By writing about inquiry, encouraging skepticism toward authority, and valuing experiential knowledge over dogma, Rabelais promoted the humanism and rational thought that were – and remain – vital to Enlightenment principles. Dans le même ordre d'idée, j'ai lu Pantagruel l'an dernier, dans la version transcrite en français contemporain, sinon c'est illisible. Eh bien, ça se lit, mais je ne me suis pas roulé par terre de rire. Le contexte ne m'est suffisamment familier pour trouver super amusantes les aventures du géant.
