8) Lots of ME/CFS patients also have sleep disturbances, so the authors were also interested in orexin, a neuropeptide that keeps us awake and is disrupted in nacrolepsy.

They plan to look at this more closely but preliminary results also suggest a decrease in ME/CFS.

Soma Ca2+ is decoupled from daily synaptic activity and neuropeptide release in Drosophila clock neurons CurrentBiology
Soma Ca2+ is decoupled from daily synaptic activity and neuropeptide release in Drosophila clock neurons
Klose et al. demonstrate in sLNv clock terminals that activity-dependent endogenous neuropeptide release occurs at midmorning, many hours after the daily activity-independent Ca2+ peak in the soma. Thus, soma Ca2+ does not indicate synaptic activity and peptidergic transmission that regulates delayed clock-dependent behaviors.

Fast-aging neurons are enriched for neuropeptide and protein biosynthesis pathways. These neuron types show earlier structural decline and loss of neuron-specific function. And indeed, pharmacological inhibition of translation prevents degeneration of fast-aging neurons. (5/n)

For anyone who's never heard of orexin:
"Orexin, also known as hypocretin, is a neuropeptide that regulates arousal, wakefulness, and appetite."
"There are 50,000–80,000 orexin-producing neurons in the human brain, located predominantly in the perifornical area and lateral hypothalamus."
