On #ThisDayInHistory in 1831, British #naturalist #CharlesDarwin set saiil on #HMSBeagle. His five years on the ship, the influence of #CharlesLyell's geology, and careful observations of nature led him to a mechanism for #evolution: #NaturalSelection, a central fact of biology.

I took a Master Naturalist course, and that is the main thing I learned that I remember.

As a naturalist, you've gotta admit, the build-up of partridges, turtle-doves, french-hens and calling birds over the last 3 days may have something to do with it!?

In 1831, the HMS Beagle set sail from Plymouth with Captain Robert FitzRoy and young naturalist Charles Darwin on board, beginning a five-year voyage around the world that would inspire Darwin’s groundbreaking ideas on evolution.

Around 300 years ago, Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus described more than 10,000 species of plants and animals.

Now, researchers at the University of Arizona have shown that new species are being discovered at a quicker rate than ever - 15% of all known species discovered within the last 20 years.
New Species Being Discovered Faster Than Ever – At a Rate of Over 16,000 a Year
New species are being discovered at a faster rate than ever—more than 16,000 every year—and the trend shows no sign of slowing.

[December 26th, 1985] American naturalist Dian Fossey, 53, who spent 18 years studying and protecting Rwanda's mountain gorillas, was killed at her remote cabin in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda. She pioneered research showing gorillas were gentle, not savage, and crusaded against poachers.

...and also.

Gorillas were first scientifically described in 1847 when American naturalist Thomas S. Savage found a skull in Africa. Further expeditions in the 1850s confirmed their existence, leading to more detailed studies of these great apes.

Mountain gorillas weren't discovered until 1904.
People like RFK Jr arguing something didn't exist way back when because they weren't aware of it is the dumbest argument ever.

We didn't know about atoms before 1815. And last I checked, matter still existed back then.

Autism not being diagnosed in Boomer days doesn't make it a modern invention.
RFK: “Where did all this autism come from? It never existed when I was a kid!”

“A Christmas Story”, a 1983 movie based on a 1971 memoir about a childhood in the 1930s: “This is my brother Ralphie. He has a ton of sensory issues and behaviors we don’t understand. Every family has a child like him.”

Heya! In relation to the cascadian movement, make sure you make clear your links not to white supremacist ideology since the cascadian movements had been historically coopted by white naturalist groups.

I am just reeling after finishing the translation of Sibylle Grimert's 2022 novel The Last of its Kind, the story of a #19thc French naturalist who finds himself companion to the last surviving great auk. About loss, extinction, ethics, other minds, it's also a subtle response to Frankenstein.
