Plus addressing our failure to create cohesive diverse societies with a strong sense of nationhood - which recognises that the alienation of white working class voters is the biggest challenge but one that cannot be talked by deepening division.

CK's 2014 decision to accord "nationhood" status to the Palestinian people by featuring their food provoked some in the local Jewish community and set off an outrage cycle in the national right wing media. I think their foundation support dried up after that, ultimately leading to the project's end.

Of course, I’m mostly saying this as a suspicion, I haven’t sketched any of it out yet, but I can see in my mind’s eye the direction it would likely go. Lot of other marxist and anti-colonial writers on nationhood that I’d look to in trying to sketch this out too.

In general nationhood is not an additive thing where you can simply pool in everyone's individual sense and then square off the sums by rote comparison

I do think this is an excellent opportunity for the EU to embark in a bit of nationhood-building. Europify the continent. Let the French be French like Californians are Californians and let the Italians be Italian like a New Yorker is a New Yorker. But let them be European first.

That's ... that's not what that means. In the 18th-century, the concept of a Nation didn't really exist, yet. The United *States* were really that: a confederation of individual States that joined together to make common cause. It wasn't until after the Civil War that nationhood became a concept.
