We really need to disabuse ourselves in this society of the notion that "speech" is just "ideas" and therefore harmless. Language is the greatest persuasive tool that we have, and those with large platforms don't just hurt feelings but can also motivate violent action with their words.

I do, ultimately, feel empathy for those who wanted to feel hopeful about Syria. I personally, deep down, hoped against hope things would somehow turn out fine, even if I knew they wouldn’t

Rule of thumb: Anyone who uses the term “tankie” unironically isn’t worth listening to about anything. The fact they call those pointing out that what may lie ahead for Syria may be worse than before “Assadists” just shows their analysis is stuck in a Marvel cinematic universe of “good vs bad guys.”

You guys have got to stop assuming people who live in a country are always experts on geopolitics as it pertains TO their country. Most people in ANY country are not extremely well-versed in the relevant geopolitical matters, meaning they can absolutely, very easily, be incorrect.

See, this is how I know for a fact “tankie” as an insult has no real definition. They call me a tankie for pointing out all that has happened is an advancement of the Greater Israel project. Indeed, I am a tankie for opposing IDF tanks. And in the hours since this post, I have been vindicated.
