One-thousand-year-old Zen aphorisms are not easily appropriated for productivity hack mcmindfulness. Zen Master Yuanwu's "Pride":

"If you have the idea of superiority and are proud of your ability, this is a disaster."

Thank you! You’ve reminded me that I’ve had ‘McMindfulness’ sitting on my kindle for months and still haven’t started reading it!

Just finished A Rare Benedictine: The Advent of Brother Cadfael (historical mystery collection) by Ellis Peters

Reading McMindfulness: How Mindfulness Became the New Capitalist Spirituality by Ronald Purser (tl;dr: mindfulness improves nothing if decontextualized and defanged for corporate benefit)

Ofc, we live in a world that makes money off extreme emotion, and mocks these evidence-based practices, or relegates them to corporate McMindfulness sessions rejigged to just keep the cog in the machine.

The whole McMindfulness thing puts the burden of tolerating the psychological impact of a workplace on the individual employee, but this is taking it to a whole new level.
This is pure supervillain behavior

Of course, it tends to get neutered into what one critic called "McMindfulness," and it feels like it's been turned into a project of stress relief, which a lot of us understand as an ur-cause of death and disease.

Are there any actually good books about buddhism that don't fall into the McMindfulness trap? I'm not looking for some guy telling me how meditation will help focus my grindset

Buddhism, like the Swatstika, was appropriated and misused to mislead. McMindfulness commercializes meditation. New Age dilutes the dharma. Psychedelic users see addiction as nirvana.

To protect & promote Buddhism, we must, like a lion’s roar, proudly declare it to others.
Unadulterated, as it is.

The problem with McMindfulness, and therapy in general, is that suffering—including yours—is an insoluble moral problem, not a mechanic's job to get you back to (re)producing reality.

In the book “Mindfulness and its discontents” (2019) by David Forbes, he raises concerns about the commercialization of mindfulness, he's worried it is turning into McMindfulness or Mine-fulness... today's blogpost is a book review, that mostly agrees with him. Linda x

“Mindfulness and it’s discontents”
The more I learn about mindfulness, the more I discover there is also push-back.  If mindfulness is a ‘movement’, then there are those who are advocates and those who are not.  The intern…

Absolutely. I'm reminded of the term "McMindfulness," which is a close cousin to fast faith. www.cbc.ca/radio/tapest...

Sadly, there’s a lot of McMindfulness out there

What you and all other so called "Secular Buddhists" are doing is watering down the Path and the Teachings, divorcing the metaphysical and cosmological framework from the doctrine, sanitizing it for Western audiences, repackaging it as McMindfulness, so that's it's nothing more than glorified CBT.

I have one question to ask:
As a Buddhist, what is your opinion on the co-opting and appropriation of Buddhist (or pretty much any Dharmic) philosophies in exploitive capitalist industries?

Like the whole "McMindfulness" thing pushed by companies to make their workers more submisive?
September 22, 2025 at 3:10 AM
basically the plot of every mcmindfulness meditation

Mindfulness is shit if all you're doing is using it to become better at doing some immoral job too. It'll make you more effective but it won't make you a better person, you're just perverting it to your own selfish ends. We call that "McMindfulness."

Has Buddhism been turned into "McMindfulness" by being swallowed up by Western culture? Has it been deeply damaged by sex and money scandals? Has it been co-opted by California spirituality to be almost unrecognizable? Does it matter? Post your comments.

This is hubris, thinking that a two-day workshop with *anyone* is enough to understand the complexities of a full mindfulness intervention, or develop your own program.

It glorifies overwork / productivity culture, then it sells us McMindfulness solutions (empty material-based false senses of profitable detachment for purposes of reproducing systemic violences).

Mcmindfulness people teach Buddhism as this exotic philosophy but they take all the religion out of it in order to make it secular therapy which is a little odd.
