Darby lit a squat, sweet-smelling beeswax taper from the Argand and placed it in a brass isinglass lantern. “Scarce a wheen o’ crops this harvest. Need us a caper to stave off hunger. C’mere till I shew yez me notion.” “I’m worried as well—hunger a-dunterin’ at the door, and ourselves chokin’ down frog’s jelly to keep our breath.” “Sakes, lemme put yez at your aise.” The clerk beckoned Conall to a panel at the end of the narthex, where a key creaked open a dark recess. “Mind your step.” Conall ducked and followed Darby up a narrow, musty staircase, more ladder than stairs, a thick layer of dust on the treads. At the top, they crossed a tiny choir chamber open to the chapel’s nave. Another panel revealed a steeper ladder. Darby tapped the low doorframe. “Mind your head.” Conall followed him up to an attic that smelled like an ancient crypt. The lantern went onto a hook, illuminating a planked catwalk running the length of the cockloft. Darby motioned at two cylinders in the shadows. Maguire gasped. “Carry me out!” he whispered. “Where’d ye get copper boilers?” “Rotterdam. Owlers brang ’em ashore, afther that . . . well . . . ’bout the size of a tarped corpse, wouldn’t ye say? A king’s man pays no nevermind to bodies going to the chapel.” Darby gave a light chuckle. “Planning a third as well. Have to figure how to heat ’em without blowin’ the roof off, just.” Conall laughed. “Och, go on, will ye, man.” “We’ll find a place. I’m afther putting by a dacent barley store to give us a start.” “Does Father—‍” “Aye, he blieves liquor’s a gift for bringing people together in peace and prayer—and taking back our goddamned tithes. Tarlach’s well-situated for custom up thonder—we’ll supply him onced he gets his license.” “Says he’ll run as a síbín if he must. Had more nor one row about it . . . some in the family worry he’ll be found out aisy.” “Och, sure as shite’s in a dunkey, a man’s dreams never done him no harm. And would ye not be bothered at the Crown stormin’ the chapel?” Darby waved a hand. “They’ll not dare, so they won’t.” Conall frowned. “They’re out hokin’ through farms—‍” “Holy sanctuary’s another matther entirely. We’re the greater number. They won’t stir up a hornet’s nest.” “Best keep to ourselves.” Darby’s eyebrows lifted. “You’re mistaken. Sakes, ye’re gonna hazard your survival.” He leaned forward, voice low. “Empires fall by the same logic, ye know. The English poked a finger up our arse, like it or no. We can neither run nor hide. I’m not saying kiss the hand, mind ye, but keep your gills rosy. Make play wherever ye can, else ye’ll perish sure as day follows night.” “We’ve no community with them at all, at all.” ‍“I daresay ye’re wrong. Pittin’ religions against each other strengthens the rivets on our chains. But we worked together onced—the Ruction only fell apart when the executive poured coin into spotters . . . and din’t we learn no small lesson from that?” Darby lifted the lantern. “Let’s go down for a bit o’ whack. I’ve got dilisk and salt pilchard.” He turned at the stairs. “Divil a word ’bout this to Donie, mind ye.” His voice dipped lower. “Love the lad like me own, but Donie lives half his life in the realm o’ ghosts.”

all 3 was clearly the winner with the other two about equally non clarified; added isinglass to all 3 and egg white + pectic enzyme started to clear, too. added egg white and isinglass to the sparkolloid jar to see how it fares by tmro and then i'll mix everything with my remaining bottles i think

Beers made using isinglass or other animal-derived fining agents may fall under regulations for Products of Animal Origin (POAO) for export to the European Union, so would possibly need an EHC too, cost £180.

Black Sheep is once again appointing an administrator. Their cask ales use isinglass.

I caught a tremendous fish and held him beside the boat half out of water, with my hook fast in a corner of his mouth. He didn’t fight. He hadn’t fought at all. He hung a grunting weight, battered and venerable and homely. Here and there his brown skin hung in strips like ancient wallpaper, and its pattern of darker brown was like wallpaper: shapes like full-blown roses stained and lost through age. He was speckled with barnacles, fine rosettes of lime, and infested with tiny white sea-lice, and underneath two or three rags of green weed hung down. While his gills were breathing in the terrible oxygen —the frightening gills, fresh and crisp with blood, that can cut so badly— I thought of the coarse white flesh packed in like feathers, the big bones and the little bones, the dramatic reds and blacks of his shiny entrails, and the pink swim-bladder like a big peony. I looked into his eyes which were far larger than mine but shallower, and yellowed, the irises backed and packed with tarnished tinfoil seen through the lenses of old scratched isinglass. They shifted a little, but not to return my stare. —It was more like the tipping of an object toward the light. I admired his sullen face, the mechanism of his jaw, and then I saw that from his lower lip —if you could call it a lip— grim, wet, and weaponlike, hung five old pieces of fish-line, or four and a wire leader with the swivel still attached, with all their five big hooks grown firmly in his mouth. A green line, frayed at the end where he broke it, two heavier lines, and a fine black thread still crimped from the strain and snap when it broke and he got away. Like medals with their ribbons frayed and wavering, a five-haired beard of wisdom trailing from his aching jaw. I stared and stared and victory filled up the little rented boat, from the pool of bilge where oil had spread a rainbow around the rusted engine to the bailer rusted orange, the sun-cracked thwarts, the oarlocks on their strings, the gunnels—until everything was rainbow, rainbow, rainbow! And I let the fish go.

Victorian Recipe for elderflower wine To 3 Gallons of Water 9 lbs of Sugar boil 1/2 an hour with whites of 2 eggs when milk warm add to it ½ a peck of picked Elder-Flowers. The juice and peel of 3 Lemons 3 or 4 Table - spoons full of yeast beat all well into the - liquor put into the cask 3 lbs of raisins - stoned. Strain the wine on to the raisins - dissolve Isinglass to fine it. Stir it often for 4 or 5 days when done working bring up - and put about a quart of Brandy to ten 9 gallons of wine. Let the Work the wine in a Peggy Pot before straining it.
