All of the workers I talked with at Tyson said that they try to not to get too attached to the animals. Joe’s message is a cautionary tale against attachment to the hogs: workers are not to love them, or else their hearts “will be wrung and possibly broken.” I thought about this message as I left the plant that afternoon, my heart broken. I couldn’t undo the sight of huge, hanging hogs and all of the blood, or forget that nearly all of the line workers are refugees from around the world, some of the most vulnerable inhabitants of the United States. The anthropology I was doing was, to invoke the anthropologist Ruth Behar, “breaking my heart.”23 When I asked Joe about why he chose this particular C. S. Lewis quote, he thought about it for a moment and replied that he knows that the employees—the team workers—at Tyson “have had very difficult lives. Very difficult. They are vulnerable people, and they have suffered so much.” He sees his job as providing some daily and weekly comic relief as well as spiritual guidance, a guidance that recognizes the daily challenges and the complicated life histories of the Black and brown women and men at his plant. Above all else, he said, he desires to be a beacon of hope and love for the workers at Tyson. He hopes that his fellow employees can feel the kind of grace that he said he has felt in his lifetime

In the 90s when I was in college I read "The Winner-Take-All Society" by Frank & Cook (1995) for an econ class. It had this passage about the "Lake Wobegon effect" which has always stuck with me:

"60% thought they were in the top 10%, and 25% thought they were in the top 1 percent."

According to this articles, companies can only survive the fierce competition in the market by firing workers to reduce payroll. At first, I thought it was just part and parcel to life. After all, I remember when I was a kid, my dad used to say, 'Companies must survive for the people to live. Only when companies do well will the people make a good living.' By this logic for companies to survive, I must remain a contract worker. And how dare I complain, even when I get fired and chased out of the company? At that time, I thought - what the hell? Is this how life is supposed to be?'

Today's White House "ANTIFA roundtable" was a pageant, a reality-TV set piece tuned to the Stephen Miller attention economy, where the goal isn't governance but spectacle, not law but the performance of "law and order." The cast list featured the usual chorus of aggrieved influencers and political appointees telling one another they are very brave, very persecuted, and very close to uncovering a sprawling left-wing terror hydra funded by NGOs, homeless-services nonprofits, and, naturally, the media. The villain, "ANTIFA," was invoked like a magic spell that makes due process disappear and federal troops appear. "It should be clear to all Americans that we have a very serious left-wing terror threat," Trump intoned, before musing that "the mayor of Chicago and governor of Illinois should be jailed." "Everything we are doing is very lawful. What they are doing is not lawful," he declared, even as he entertained a question about suspending habeas corpus to deal with so-called "insurrectionists." Pam Bondi chimed in: "ANTIFA is a domestic left-wing terrorist organization... This is not activism. It's anarchy." And the president nodded along when one participant suggested designating ANTIFA as a foreign terrorist organization: "If you agree, I agree. Let's get it done." The effect was surreal: officials and influencers speaking of neighbors, students, and critics as if they were al-Qaeda cells, while threatening to withhold back pay from federal workers who displease the president, "Most will get back pay... there are some people that really don't deserve to be taken care of", and promising that "whatever perch you sit in, it will be crushed." And then came the question about the No Kings rally. A reporter noted that the city of Austin was preparing to waive about $120,000 in fees so the event could go forward. Trump's response wasn't about democracy, free speech, or even the First Amendment. It was about punishment: "I would love to do something about that. Bring a lawsuit... The best thing you can do is have honest elections because the elections are totally rigged in so many of these places... The biggest thing you can do is have honest elections... You need borders... You need honest media. You need honest elections and you have a great country." And just to drive the point home, he handed the grievance off to his personal lawyers in the room: "If they're waiving a fee... I guarantee they wouldn't waive it if it was... a conservative rally. So maybe you can look into that, Pam. Todd, that sounds like one for Todd." This is the whole game in miniature: the protest is irrelevant, the grievance is the point, and the machinery of government is available to be pointed at whomever Trump thinks has slighted him. Even a city permit fee becomes evidence of treason, a loyalty test for attorneys general, and a justification for unleashing the Justice Department on a rally with the unforgivable audacity to say out loud what the Founders once wrote down: No Kings. Enter the Grim Reaper. If this sounds familiar, it's because we've seen the rehearsal notes. Miller's theory of the moment is simple: saturate the feed with lurid images and language, “insurrection," "terror," "burning cities", until exhausted, low-information voters accept presidential fiat as the only adult in the room. Today's script turned that dial to eleven. Judges who limit executive power were recast as insurgents. Governors and mayors who resist federalized deployments were framed as criminals. The president mused, again, about jailing them, dangled foreign trips for Middle East "peace," and floated the idea of designating an amorphous domestic bogeyman as a foreign terrorist organization, because in this story, adjectives are just handcuffs waiting for a noun. The discussion was a study in inversion. " Everything we are doing is very lawful," the president insists, moments before suggesting the law should not apply to him. "We are following the money," declares a self-styled investigator, moments before admitting the targets are more vibes than entities, no LLCs, no EINs, just masks and menace. A journalist recounts trauma and brain bleeds; the president praises her courage, then pivots to the stock market. Another asks about back pay for workers in a shutdown the administration engineered as a political cudgel; the president says "most" will get paid, except the ones who won't, depending on whether they've displeased him. Habeas corpus even wanders into the chat like a stray cat: should we suspend it? No one says yes, but the thought hangs in the air like tear gas. The real question in the middle of this shutdown isn't just how long it drags on, but what, exactly, we're funding. Do we want our tax dollars underwriting an autocracy, one that treats its own citizens as enemies of the state? If Democrats cave, they won't just be ending a shutdown; they'll be co-signing the transformation of governance into theater and theater into rule. Complicity dressed up as pragmatism. Because that's what this regime offers: governance as content, content as weapon. The goal is to blur every line, between protest and war, local policing and federal occupation, journalism and propaganda, criminal behavior and political identity. It's not about solving problems but staging them, replaying them on loop until outrage itself becomes the currency of power. And if we spend our days arguing over whether Portland is a "bombed-out hellscape," then Trump and his chorus have already won. We've been baited into debating the set design while the script rolls on. The only questions worth asking are about legitimacy and money. Alisa Kasmer Jul 17 • O A preface: I have debated about sharing this. A week ago, after the ICE raids in Camarillo, I had the worst panic attack l've experienced in over 30 years. (Shoutout to Zoloft for holding it together. F off, RFK, Jr.) Hours of sobbing, shaking, nausea, and complete loss of control into the early morning hours, led me to do the only thing that ever brings some clarity: write. The next day I started to write, while still reeling from the emotional hangover. A few days later, I was struck with another panic attack, this time as I was driving (thankfully close enough to home to make it back in one piece.) This sent me back into a spiral of heartbreak. I picked up where I had left off, and kept writing. Many of you know who my cousin is. Being public about it is something I've struggled with. I live with real fear about what posting something this raw might bring. I am living with the deep pain of watching someone I once loved become the face of evil. But I know that staying silent only deepens the ache. There's so much more I could say, and maybe someday I will. It's a long read. I'm wordy AF. ーーーーー Last night, I found myself in a stage of grief I didn't even realize I had been carrying. A grief that's been living inside me for years— quiet, but constant. It comes from being so close to the root of something violent and vile in this country. I cried until I couldn't breathe, hours of sobbing, gasping, shaking, sick to my stomach with a weight in my chest that was too heavy to fight. I was having a panic attack I couldn't escape. Maybe it was ten years of anger and pain finally breaking through the surface. Maybe it was the most recent ICE raids turning my rage into sorrow. Whatever it was, something in me cracked wide open and has shaken me to my core. I think many of us are grieving. Grieving a world that feels more cruel than kind. A future that feels further away each day. I grieve for the country we could be... one with unmatched wealth, intelligence, and potential. A nation with resources to ensure everyone lives with dignity, equity, health, and safety. A nation with enough technological and medical advancements to be something truly extraordinary. But instead, those resources and that wealth are being hoarded by a few, poisoned by ego and power, devoid of empathy, starving the rest. Our privilege has been wasted on cruelty and torture, targeting the very people who make our communities whole— the hardest workers, the most vulnerable, the ones who carry this country on their backs. A society is only as strong as its most vulnerable, and ours are at their weakest. This is not by accident, but by design. Your design, Stephen. Then there's the grief I carry inside my own family- the most personal and painful. I grieve a cousin I once loved. A boy I watched grow up, babysat, and shared a childhood with. The kid I made fun of for his obsession with Michael Jackson and Ghostbusters. I was reached out by an AI lab to ask about my opinions on AI as a #gamedev, I thought to share my response to see what other people think. I tried to present a balanced and pragmatic view.

For the record, my game project (which I'm probably cancelling to focus on other stuff) has no AI in it.
[Cutting most of the text and focusing on the last bit due to bsky alt text limits, they HATE the visually impaired!!] My response: However, the "easy money" AI integrations we see these days are very unlikely to be adopted. LLMs for characters are not only economically unfeasible (small models are too stupid, big models require a server to process data), but they take control from the authors and very quickly create ludonarrative dissonances that can break experiences. Similarly, directly presenting AI art is bound to create a lot of backlash. It takes away work from an already exploited trade, which most of us as fellow workers can't help but symthathise with. It's in very poor taste to use AI art, and it'll never be accepted until the underlying economic struggle is resolved. Only once art can return to be pure and free from the shackles of capitalism can AI art be accepted by society at large. Specifically in the context of TTS, I think it's mainly optics. Most TTS models are trained on data that was not obtained in a righteous way, which obviously creates backlash from people who have a spine. The solution is to keep making good TTS models that use ethically sourced data. I don't think there's anything more to it, as TTS is something people already want and like, they just don't want it from a bad source. It's like mangoes, everyone loves mangoes, but nobody wants to eat a mango sourced from Israel.

To progressives, the best thing about railroads is that people riding them are not in automobiles, which are subversive of the deference on which progressivism depends. Automobiles go hither and yon, wherever and whenever the driver desires, without timetables. Automobiles encourage people to think they—unsupervised, untutored, and unscripted—are masters of their fates. The automobile encourages people in delusions of adequacy, which make them resistant to government by experts who know what choices people should make. Time was, the progressive cry was "Workers of the world unite!" or "Power to the people!" Now it is less resonant: "All aboard!"

The Japan Toilet Association began as a small group called the "Toiletpia Association" in 1984. At the time, only around 60% of toilets were flush-flush, and station and public restrooms were hardly comfortable. Toiletpia Association was founded with the aim of highlighting this issue and considering it from the perspective of urban development. It was a unique gathering held at a "Salon Shu" in Shinbashi, Tokyo—a place similar to a real-life social networking site for office workers today—where people would drink and talk about toilets. I served as the "organizer." The Japan Toilet Association and its members have played a major role in all aspects, including the evolution of buildings, facilities, and equipment, the enhancement of world-class cleaning and maintenance, and the influence on national and local government policies. As a result, Japan's toilet culture is beginning to have an impact on the world. Organizations similar to the Toilet Association are active in several countries.
