Introduction Balkanism and Orientalism: Are They Different Categories? specter is haunting Western culture — the specter of the Balkans. All the powers A have entered into a holy alliance to exorcise this specter: politicians and journal-ists, conservative academics and radical intellectuals, moralists of all kind, gender, and fashion. Where is the adversarial group that has not been decried as "Balkan" and "balkanizing" by its opponents? Where the accused have not hurled back the branding reproach of "balkanism"? By the beginning of the twentieth century, Europe had added to its repertoire of Schimpfwörter, or disparagements, a new one that, although recently coined, turned out to be more persistent over time than others with centuries-old tradition. "Balkanization" not only had come to denote the parcelization of large and viable political units but also had become a synonym for a reversion to the tribal, the back-ward, the primitive, the barbarian. In its latest hypostasis, particularly in American academe, it has been completely decontextualized and paradigmatically related to a variety of problems. That the Balkans have been described as the "other" of Europe does not need special proof. What has been emphasized about the Balkans is that its inhabitants do not care to conform to the standards of behavior devised as normative by and for the civilized world. As with any generalization, this one is based on reductionism, but the reductionism and stereotyping of the Balkans has been ot such degree and intensity that the discourse merits and requires special analysis. The "civilized world" (the term is introduced not ironically but as a self-proclaimed label) was first seriously upset with the Balkans at the time of the Balkan wars (1912-1913). News of the barbarities committed in this distant European Mediterranean peninsula came flooding in and challenged the peace movements that not only were gaining strength in Europe but were beginning to be institutionalized. … 4 Introduction Britain, Russia, Germany, and Austria-Hungary, was published in 1914. This i magnum opus that looked into the historical roots of the Balkan conflict, po senting the points of view and aspirations of the belligerents, as well as the as nomic, social, and moral consequences of the wars, and their relation to inte national law. The report included an introduction by Baron d'Estournelled Constant reiterating the main principles of the peace movement: "Let us repe, for the benefit of those who accuse us of "bleating for peace at any price, wha we have always maintained: War rather than slavery; Arbitration rather than wa Conciliation rather than arbitration."l De Constant differentiated between the first and the second Balkan was te first was defensive and a war of independence, "the supreme protest against is lence, and generally the protest of the weak against the strong ... and for this reaso it was glorious and popular throughout the civilized world." The second was a prode tory war in which "both victor and vanquished lose morally and materially. " Sil, for all their differences, both Balkan wars "finally sacrificed treasures of riches, lives, and heroism. The propaganda campaign to demonize the Serbs fits the larger policy of the Western powers. The Serbs were targeted for demonization because they were the largest nationality and the one most opposed to the breakup of Yugoslavia. None other than Charles Boyd, former deputy commander of the U.S. European command, commented on it in 1994: "The popular image of this war in Bosnia is one of unrelenting Serb expansionism. Much of what the Croatians call 'the occupied territories' is land that has been held by Serbs for more that three centuries. The same is true of most Serb land in Bosnia.... What actually happened is that they pulled him from a car, beat him so viciously with a steel baton that he had 8 skull fractures, 5 life-threatening brain hemorrhages, and couldn’t remember he had a daughter.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Alberto Castañeda Mondragón says his memory was so jumbled after a beating by immigration officers that he initially could not remember he had a daughter and still struggles to recall treasured moments like the night he taught her to dance. But the violence he endured last month in Minnesota while being detained is seared into his battered brain. He remembers Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents pulling him from a friend’s car on Jan. 8 outside a St. Paul shopping center and throwing him to the ground, handcuffing him, then punching him and striking his head with a steel baton. He remembers being dragged into an SUV and taken to a detention facility, where he said he was beaten again. He also remembers the emergency room and the intense pain from eight skull fractures and five life-threatening brain hemorrhages.

Looking into #Trotsky's fate and the use of "counterrevolutionary" as a #DARVO label used against him— but also #gay people as #Stalin 's enemies—you can see similar #queerphobia nowadays; i.e., in people who hope you don't recognize the fascist dogwhistle: "an enigma wrapped in a mystery" 1/2
Note on Trotsky (2/7/2026): This portion of the document is rather unfair to Trotsky—or rather it glosses over the heated, messy, at times back-and-forth relations had between Trotsky and Lenin to focus, instead, somewhat myopically on Stalin and Lenin. So I'd like to mention a few points we don't have time to go into, here: One, the idea of "permanent/world revolution" versus "Socialism in one country" is, on its own, largely a question of Socialism before and after Stalin; i.e., no one before Stalin argued for one-country Socialism, which restricted the movement to a singular space vulnerable to crisis [...]. Two, Trotsky was a prominent figure of the Russian Revolution—one where Stalin, who betrayed Trotsky and Lenin, would prove himself a counterrevolutionary in bad faith; i.e., by accusing others, mid-DARVO-and-obscurantism. Three, "Trotskyism" in the late 1920s into Stalin's reign was a DARVO label of "counterrevolutionary activities"; i.e., levied by him and his yes-men against their primary foe and mutual friend to Lenin. RCA explains how Trotsky and Lenin had similar views on permanent revolution—views which required Socialism to occur everywhere, not just in Russia—and which, because both men were writing about them at the same time, led some to accuse Lenin of "Trotskyism" circa 1917 (timestamp: 19:52). Thereabouts, "Trotskyism" meant conciliation with different factions of the rebellion, namely workers and liberal party figures (an idea which Trotsky would abandon and Lenin absolve him of in the following years; timestamp: 25:31). However, by Lenin's death, it had a more us-versus vibe that Stalin—having gradually mislead Lenin—abused against Trotsky and world revolution, over time. This was preceded by Stalin's aforementioned betrayal of Lenin, which occurred slowly enough to fool the older man (nobody's perfect); i.e., whose friendship Stalin abused to become dictator of the proletariat in ways Lenin never envisioned or actually argued for. Allan Woods, of the RCA, writes, In order to carry out a struggle against bureaucracy, Lenin advocated the setting up of a "Commission on Workers and Peasants Inspection" (RABKRIN), as the highest arbiter and guardian of party morality, and as a weapon against alien elements in the Soviet state apparatus. At the centre of RABKRIN Lenin placed a man whom he respected for his organisational abilities and strong character - Stalin. Amongst other important functions, RABKRIN scrutinised the selection and appointment of responsible workers in the state and party. Whoever had the power to hold up the promotion of some and advance others obviously held a weapon which could serve their own interests. Stalin did not scruple to use it for his. RABKRIN turned from a weapon against bureaucracy into a hotbed of careerist intrigue. Stalin cynically used his position in RABKRIN, and later his control of the party Secretariat, to gather around himself a bloc of yes-men - nonentities whose only allegiance was to the man who helped them climb into comfortable positions. From the highest arbiter of party morality, RABKRIN sank to the lowest depths of bureaucratic cynicism. Trotsky noticed what was going on before Lenin, whose illness prevented his close supervision of party work. Trotsky pointed out that "those working in RABKRIN are chiefly workers who have come to grief in other fields," and drew attention to the "extreme prevalence of intrigue in the organs of RABKRIN which has become a by-word throughout the country' (source: "Lenin's Last Struggle," 2023). As such, my earlier statement "Stalin was Lenin's chosen dictatorial successor"—while not technically false, insofar as Stalin abused Lenin's friendship to set himself up as de facto ruler of the Soviet bureaucratic engine—is still me speaking a bit too soon/reductively regarding Lenin's choice and attitudes, while also overlooking the day-to-day complexities of what was actually going on between all three men [...] Again, the state is straight, white and male, and ASAB; Stalin sucked, like Mao did, and so many others. Recognize the larger dialectical-material effects, all the while, but don't ignore that he was a rapist and so were his friends (e.g., Beria, a pedophile cop; see: Behind the Bastard's "Part One: Beria: Stalin's Pedophile Cop," 2024). The state rapes by design; rape apologia for dictators aides in a rape mentality the state constantly relies on, while resurrecting itself in some shape or form. Gulags and concentration camps, the German Nazis and Stalinist Soviets used the same methods and language, calling queerness both "degenerate" and "counterrevolutionary" in ways that continue into the present; i.e., that defend the household as tied to the state: criminalization of this or that and calling it "bourgeois." DARVO is DARVO, code is code—which the Soviets and their planned economy employed alongside the Nazis: Thus, everything shifted towards promoting the bourgeois family as the basis for the production and reproduction of labour. With this came the idealization of motherhood, up to the point where mothers with more than seven children received incentives, very much like what Mussolini and Hitler were doing in the same period. Thus abortion was banned and divorce made less accessible. As we can see, this is the final triumph of the backward traditions of old Russia embodied in the prejudices of the bureaucracy. And these prejudices reached right to the top in the person of Stalin himself (source: "From Emancipation to Criminalisation"). To this, queerness was treated as criminal alongside prostitution for its threatening of the household; re: as "homewreckers," much like whores and queer folk have been for millennia. The state hates sex, but needs to promise "good, orderly" forms of it provided "bad, disorderly" forms are policed to guarantee a continued hold on state power by those in charge. [...] Here, Charlitics calls me a counterrevolutionary while insisting he's for the equality of all peoples; i.e., "I'm the victim/true revolutionary and you're attacking me/undermining rebellion!" It's DARVO and obscurantism—the kind used by Stalin and his ilk, past and present, to conceal their betrayal of the cause; i.e., while simultaneously targeting those actually pushing for Socialism in practice and not just on paper.
