thanks to the internet, we can now build hyperscale chamber pot centers in communities where even poorer marginalized people live
I just hope Mamdani can finally bring an end to New Yorkers’ disgusting and archaic habit of emptying their chamber pots out the window without a care for who might be walking below

"Grid capacity is being diverted to new hyperscale sites, transmission upgrades are being driven by their load, the state is pouring billions into emergency generators to stabilise supply. Households face higher bills, electrification plans have stalled, climate targets are slipping out of reach."
Ireland has one of the world's highest concentrations of data centers. The expansion has reshaped the grid & deepened fossil fuel use. As the EU pushes to triple data center capacity, Ireland offers a warning, writes Louis Boyd-Madsen. Read our investigation with AlgorithmWatch:
What Ireland’s Data Center Crisis Means for the EU’s AI Sovereignty Plans | TechPolicy.Press
Louis Boyd-Madsen traces how a model of unregulated digital growth has outpaced energy planning in Ireland, and why it matters for the EU’s AI ambitions.

And that means a moratorium on the push for hyperscale data centers that are parasites on our communities and currently threatening your and my home town of Tucson, right? And establish guard rails to protect our people, communities, and planet from the heedless rush to AI by tech oligarchs, yes?

what I assumed neo-brandesians were: normal people who think huge monopolies are bad

what they actually are: extremely online weirdos addicted to picking fights against progressives for the crime of wanting to build more clean energy and housing

what a bizarre group of people

Our officials need to listen to experts like Jackie, who can clearly explain how the proliferation of hyperscale data centers is built on debt, how they're unsustainable, and what it means to her as a Marana resident who wants continue living here. From the Marana Planning Commission meeting 12/10

The hyperscale data centers that enable GenAI are destroying marginalized and rural communities. These companies are suing municipalities that fight back. Our students, teachers, families are all poorer -in health, environment, imagination- for it. This is an embarrassment.
We know students, like the rest of the world, are using AI. Teachers need to be equipped to deal w/all the issues AI creates. Our approach starts with maximizing safety & privacy and empowering educators to make educational decisions, so AI tools can benefit not harm www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-ne...
AI has become the norm for students. Teachers are playing catch-up.
At a New York City training session, educators explored how artificial intelligence could support teaching while also discussing their concerns around the technology.

Disgusting. I have no doubt that the Google, Meta, Oracle, Amazon, and other Big Tech donors are a key reason for Trump trying to keep AI unregulated and a major reason states are being inundated by resource-thirsty hyperscale AI data centers on every piece of open rural ground they can find. 🤬

Last week, Blue Owl (a private investment firm) pulled out of the $10bn Stargate Michigan data center. This is catastrophic for the industry - Blue Owl pulled together *all the money* that has gone into the biggest data center projects in the world.

In fact, the computation is (again) highly concentrated, but off-campus, in the form of data centers, especially hyperscale data centers. And these are important locations of resistance --- especially the folks organizing to prevent their construction.

☁️ AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform dominate the market.
They offer powerful services — but also complex pricing, deep vendor lock-in, and exposure to non-EU jurisdiction, even when workloads run in EU regions.

And in the process harming both the information ecosystem (text that no one is accountable for literally in the way of text that the authors themselves stand behind) and the physical one (pointless compute cycles, further motivation for more hyperscale datacenters).

Starke County, Indiana voted 75% for Trump in 2024.

But now they're opposing Trump's AI agenda, and the Planning Commission voted unanimously to recommend a 12 month pause on new hyperscale data centers.

Banning AI data centers is becoming increasingly popular.

Trump is backing AI. This Trump-voting town wants to ban AI data centers anyways.
