They haven't met our private utilities like Tucson Electric Power, who can't decide whether our rate hikes are for past or future expenses, or the Arizona Corporation Commission, which is totally fine with whatever the utilities want.

Georgia is expected to lose $2.5 BILLION to data center sales tax exemptions in FY 2026, according to the state’s updated fiscal projections.

#Amazon’s Ring is breaking up with #Flock! Now that we’ve cut access to 10M+ household cameras with the police and ICE, let’s take it a step further and cut Ring’s partnership with Axon Enterprise.

We deserve a world without surveillance.

Yuuuup. Our use of the internet simply does not scale in proportion to the proliferation of hyperscale data centers. Netflix doesn’t have a billion new movies. We’re not uploading 1000x as many cat videos.

People are now trying to defend their AI generated slop images by saying things like "well, using Netflix and social media use just as much energy and are also bad for the environment" and I just really hate how people have no critical thinking and comprehension skills anymore
Powering and cooling their rows of server stacks also takes an astonishing amount of electricity. A conventional data center-think cloud storage for your work documents or streaming videos-draws as much electricity as 10,000 to 25,000 households, according to the International Energy Agency. But a newer, Al-focused "hyperscale" data center can use as much power as 100,000 homes or more. Meta's Hyperion data center in Louisiana, for example, is expected to draw more than twice the power of the entire city of New Orleans once completed. Another Meta data center planned in Wyoming will use more electricity than every home in the state combined. U.S. data centers consumed 183 terawatt- hours (TWh) of electricity in 2024, according to TEA estimates. That works out to more than 4% of the country's total electricity consumption last year - and is roughly equivalent to the annual electricity demand of the entire nation of Pakistan. By 2030, this figure is projected to grow by 133% to 426 TWh. Because data centers handle many types of workloads, it's difficult to distinguish the exact share of their total electricity demand that comes from Al alone. But a typical Al-focused hyperscaler annually consumes as much electricity as 100,000 households. The larger ones currently under construction are expected to use 20 times as much, the IEA predicts. I’m not arguing with no account defending AI. My grandmother lives in an area being environmentally compromised currently by an ai data center. I remember the color of the lake before they built it and the sludge I see in it when I go to see her. Shut the fuck up about “the benefits of AI” forever.

Thanks for this segment, @velshi.com! Please also bring into the story the infrastructure that supports these tools. Nothing explains the proliferation of hyperscale data centers better than the expansion of the surveillance state and the economics of the cruelty industry.
