Worse, I had some scary, homophobic comments shouted out of car windows.

So as much fun as I had at the con, Detroit, city of my birth, is still a place that feels like it is very much struggling, and at many times felt ugly, mean and nasty, walking the 4 blocks from Greektown to the con hotel.

I took the Detroit-Windsor tunnel many times when I lived in Windsor, as it was just a few blocks from my place. It was a quick trip for dinner in Greektown, back in the day. I even ran through the tunnel for the Detroit Marathon. What a world we now live in […]

The #LittleJamaica neighbourhood has been a forgotten footnote in so much of Toronto past & hasn’t been at the table for the present or future.

The Greektown on the Danforth BIA has proposed a 2026 Operating Budget of $1,791,141 with a levy of $606,484 which is 7.0% or $39,676 higher than 2025, partially offsetting the $58,000 reduction in Contribution from Accumulated Surplus Reserves. Festivals and Events expenditure increased by $1,040,000, with a direct offset in increase in Signature Events Revenue by $988,000. Capital expenditure for cost shared projects decreased by $75,458 (Appendix A, Table 24).|

Jamon Jordan (Facebook): Elizabeth 'Lisette' Denison Forth was born in slavery. Her parents, Peter and Hannah Denison, had 4 children - James, Elizabeth, Scipio and Peter Jr. William Tucker was their slaveowner. William Tucker died in 1806, and Catherine Tucker, his widow, eventually freed Peter and Hannah Denison, but not their 4 children. The Denisons then sued for freedom. Their attorney, was Elijah Brush, who had been the 2nd mayor of Detroit. Brush, for a period of time, was also a slaveowner, after inheriting the property of his father-in-law, John Askin. The case - Denison v. Tucker (1807) was heard by Michigan Territorial Supreme Court Justice, Augustus Woodward, appointed by slaveowner and President Thomas Jefferson. Before he came to Detroit, Woodward too, was a slaveowner. He also named the main street dividing Detroit into east & west after himself. And he was one of the founders of the University of Michigan. Woodward ruled that anyone born in the Michigan Territory after 1796. when the U.S. Woodward ruled that anyone born in the Michigan Territory after 1796, when the U.S. Army removed the British from control of Fort Detroit, was free. This would help Black people born in Detroit after 1796 declare their freedom. But none of the Denisons were born after 1796. Woodward also ruled that Black people who were born between 1787 (Northwest Ordinance, which prohibited slavery in Michigan) and 1796, could only be enslaved until they were 25 years old, following the provisions of the 1793 Act to Limit Slavery in Upper Canada, which Detroit was a part of before the US took military control. One of the Denisons - Peter Jr. - was born within that period. He was to go free at the age of 25. He was then about 14 years old. Woodward ruled that anyone born in Detroit before 1787, before the Northwest Ordinance, when Detroit was under legal, and military control of the British, under the auspices of the Jay Treaty of 1794, were enslaved for life. The other 3 - James, Lisette and Scipio - were to be enslaved for life. Elizabeth "Lisette" - was born in 1786. James & Scipio were her elder brothers. So the family, with assistance from their attorney, Elijah Brush, escaped to Canada. They lived with and worked for John Askin, the former Detroit slaveowner and fur trader. Years later, they returned to Detroit. Peter Denison, the family patriarch, was appointed leader of the Black Militia by Michigan Territorial Governor William Hull during the War of 1812. The rest of the family worked for Mayor Solomon Sibley, who in 1806, was the first mayor of Detroit, and in 1815, under the new city charter, was now the Chairman of the Detroit Board of Trustees (sorta like a mayor). While working there, Lisette used her pay, and began buying land. The family also worked for Elijah Brush and his family on their land - present-day Brush Park. While working there, Lisette invested in banks, steam ships, and bought a plot of land from Stephen Mack, in what is now Pontiac, Michigan, becoming the first Black woman to own land in Oakland County, Michigan. There is a myth that she was the first Black person to own land in Michigan, and another myth that she was the first Black woman to own land in America. Neither of these are true. She is the first Black woman to own land in Oakland County, MI. She eventually began working for John and Eliza Biddle. John Biddle was the 4th ELECTED mayor (in the earlier system, mayors were appointed). While working for the Biddles, she bought a plot of land at 328 Macomb Street (the corner of Macomb and Brush). This would be her home. She never lived in Pontiac,. She never lived in Oakland County. She owned land there as a real estate investment. She lived in Detroit, Michigan. Today, what was her homesite is now the parking lot of Old Shillelagh, Bar in Greektown. Back then, it was the western edge of Black Bottom. While working for the Biddles, Lisette had attained a status of wealth. She traveled to Philadelphia, and Paris, France, and traveled Europe. Although she married, her husband died within 3 years, and they never had children. When she
