yeah, everyone has their own miniature version of being a apprachnik in a dictatorship. “yes, the crop yield numbers are fake, but if the farmers pretend to have a harvest i shall pretend to believe them”
I’ve been fascinated with this phenomena since Musk bought Twitter. People there, smart ones, know the algo is manipulated and know much of their “reach” are bots, but the fake numbers that they KNOW are fake still “feel” better than real numbers that might be numerically less but actual people.

Whenever I'm on Extwitter these days it's very noticeable how much more culture war content there is there than here. Much more. I only know what Nate is talking about because of that site, and I inevitably follow more Americans here than there.
