Digital Sovereignty Won’t Save Us From Internet Shutdowns
The development community needs to wake up to a harsh reality: the same digital sovereignty rhetoric we've championed to counter American and Chinese tech monopolies is being weaponized by authoritarian regimes to justify mass surveillance and communication blackouts that literally enable state violence. Weaponized Infrastructure in Iran Let's be honest about what digital sovereignty means in practice for millions of Iranians right now.

there are some interesting apps in the ATmosphere. Roomy gives a discord-like experience (text only right now), and i don't know if it will support private / permissions data. but folks are working hard to counter surveillance in tech.

Levels of surveillance honesty:
1) We do not tap Americans
2) Of course we do counter-espionage taps, don't be stupid
3) You idiots are supposed to find dirt on libs, not us
4) The deep state and the people are one

The local government is starting to ask why their quiet community is hosting a federal surveillance hub that runs counter to their values. The sit-in was the physical manifestation of a political revolt that is brewing at the town hall level.

I something from someone with multiple contacts in the upper echelons of FBI counter surveillance who think it’s about Gabbard’s suspected activities as a foreign agent and in particular her “disappearance from the screen” during a visit to Syria.

This isn't going to help anyone.

Now they can manipulate footage with AI to counter observer footage and observations. Like they did with a photo of the detained reporter Nekima Armstrong to make her look like she was crying.

And record observers to be added to the surveillance database.

The point of counter-surveillance isn't to win, it's to provide early warning for the community.

Exactly, in court and in the court of public opinion as a check and balance. With many ordinary people stepping forward, the public perception battle is winnable; trying to do strict counter-surveillance against ICE and Palantir is not

If democracy fails in the U.S., what’s left to counter global autocracy?

AI, surveillance & silence make a dangerous mix. Even if you’re outside the U.S., speak up. A post can be an act of resistance.

The people need to stop supplying the mass surveillance.
We have to curb our smart phone addictions & create a counter culture.
The government is benefiting off our voluntary lack of privacy & using it to oppress us. They have 0 intentions of curbing AI.

A lot of people, stupid ones mind you, seem to think OpSec concerns are dumb because they misunderstand it as "making yourself untraceable" rather than being a whole host of safety concerns that includes counter-surveillance efforts but also much more mundane things: For example Will making a public
Really surprising that Will Stancil, a guy who does everything for attention and brand-building and is constitutionally incapable of considering he could be wrong, is mad about OpSec concerns and thinks after a week of activism he knows better than people who have been doing it for years

Other strategies are out there. But every step you take to counter surveillance, like taking routes that avoid traffic lights, covering your face, not bringing trackable devices, taking public transit/paying in cash... all of it matters, and it's an offensive tool.

Okay, now breathe and center yourself. We're not done yet.

ICE has access to *a lot* of data, but that means they have a big haystack and you're a piece of hay. You're one person (mostly).

One strategy to counter surveillance is to look like all the other pieces of hay. It's just *one*.

Free invention for someone. A drone with two docking stations packaged. Drone can carry say 5lb payload. On board camera. Doubles as counter surveillance and "Door dash" meal delivery routing.
