Why is there no such thing as antigravity?

#AskEthan

In our Universe, everything that we know of experiences the influence of gravity.

But if there are antiparticles, why isn't there any antigravity?

Ask Ethan: Why is there no such thing as antigravity?
In General Relativity, the matter and energy curve spacetime, which we experience as gravity. Why can't there be an "antigravity" force?

What is the role of fate in contemporary life

Academically it spills through in the rejection of Great Man and the embrace of tidal history.

Suffered a major setback in the physics poisoned 20th century.

Somewhat irrepressible in the pop Astro culture, there is the need for that flavor of sense

Prove Einstein’s relativity for yourself for under $100

Einstein's relativity has been misunderstood by more people than almost any correct physical theory ever.

Here's how you can prove it for yourself, DIY-style, for cheap.

Prove Einstein's relativity for yourself for under $100
Particles are everywhere, including particles from space that stream through the human body. Here's how they prove Einstein's relativity.

Game #5: Astro Robo Sasa
Price: $6.81 (Total $23.34)

This is a unique physics/gravity based action puzzler where the goal is to collect all the energy capsules in each stage. You move by firing your gun and the recoil pushes you in the opposite direction.

Playing Astro Bot and this is the most next gen thing I’ve seen.
If you’re very serious game is so modern and high tech… where’s all the cool physics stuff that Astro Bod does, huh?

Then again. I see Blinx The Time Sweeper and the wet bricks in Perfect Dark Zero as previous next gen tech indicators

They're told they have zero chance of doing serious mathematics the way they're going about it, and their attitude is total indignation they're not even being given a chance. I can only imagine what it's like on the quantum theory and astro physics subs.

Either Luffy or Astro Boy.

Astro Boy feels like one of the greats akin to Mickey or Bugs, but Luffy also got them whacky cartoon physics like Bugs Bunny.

The simplest explanation for ultra-high-energy cosmic rays

The highest-energy cosmic rays are too high in energy.... for bare protons.

But if they're actually heavier ions instead, the simplest explanation is just plain iron-ic.

The highest-energy particles could be a sign of new, unexpected physics. But the simplest, most mundane explanation is particularly iron-ic.

Yup, there's nothing like seeing students consistently turn in wrong answers in astro and physics to make me have zero confidence in anything currently being marketed to us as trustworthy.
suspect a big reason why many academics and others who work in areas where getting facts RIGHT is key are disinterested in using LLMs for research:

they’ve tried it, they keep noticing major errors in output, and they conclude that having to verify all that doesn’t actually save them time.

(Astro)physicists do have a strong record of opening up new fields _where nobody else knows anything yet either_ - physics mental habits can be powerful. They have an equally strong record of doing stupid things through failure to recognize that other people do know things in established fields.

As 2025 ends, the Standard Model still hasn’t cracked

Here in 2025, many challenges have arisen to both Standard Models: particle physics and cosmology.

As the year end, there's barely a crack in either.

Ah, maybe it depends on topic/institution. Mine was astro and a 50/50 split, though several of the women were motivated by spiting the teachers who’d told them Physics wasn’t for girls…

How do LLMs/chatbots impact students and cheating?

#AskEthan

Across all educational levels, students are outsourcing their assignments to LLMs like ChatGPT.

Except for the ones who care about growing their own minds, they're unlikely to stop.

Ask Ethan: How do LLMs/chatbots impact students and cheating?
As technology advances, more opportunities for cheating arise. AI/LLMs aren't posing a new problem; they're how students cheat themselves.

I feel like that is basically an objectively untrue statement nowhat you believe. The Gospels disagree with each other (as we would suspect if they were genuine accounts by people), there are two creation narratives, quantum and Astro physics are incompatible etc.

Question for the astro peeps: I have an introduction-to-asteroid-and-comets lecture, which is currently very, uhm, narrative – lots of statements, but very little underlying physics. Does anyone have ideas about simple calculations/order-of-magnitude-musings I could include? 🧪🔭⚛️ 1/

I was an undergrad 30+ years ago taking a full-time astro/physics-major load, working three jobs, and caring for a parent with terminal cancer.

So I don’t know how new some of this really is.

bsky.app/profile/shen...
Most college students are not that. Increasingly they are engaged in carework, have full-time jobs, or are otherwise responsible for things that they were not some fifteen or twenty years ago. Indeed, only the MOST privileged student has the time or space to fulfill the image of a full time student.

New #physics post - modeling the astroblaster. Could you get the top ball to make it into space? Spoiler alert: no.

Can an AstroBlaster Launch a Ball Into Space?
No. That’s the answer. You can’t throw something into space, so an astroblaster won’t do it either. OK, now for the other important…
