A single image of 31 Atlas, that interstellar comet everyone was talking about, on its way out again. I caught it very near a galaxy which I'm about 85% sure is IC 591. Because it was high in the sky and closer to Earth than last time, I was able to get a hint of tail. #Astronomy #Astrophotography

The moon tonight.

The Fireworks Galaxy with the small open star cluster NGC 6939. #Astronomy #Astrophotography

This was supposed to be over nine hours of the Flame and Horsehead, but one whole night had to be thrown away due to humidity and thin clouds, and what I kept showed signs of it too. I'll try for a better image of this later in the season. #Astronomy #astrophotography

The open star cluster NGC 752 in Andromeda. #Astronomy #Astrophotography

A more finished image of the Eastern Veil Nebula, with a couple more hours added. In a perfect world I'd be holding out for another ten hours. In the real world we're about to get a week of rain. #astronomy #Astrophotography

Sharing this for aesthetic reasons only. This is actually what happens when you set a meridian limit. The mount stops tracking at a certain point to keep equipment from colliding with itself. But the effect is like the stars are falling, and I thought it was cool.

I've also been working on the Eastern Veil Nebula for a couple of very short nights. This is less than four hours of it. If the weather holds I'll work on it two more nights and this won't be the final. #Astronomy #Astrophotography

NGC 1499, the California Nebula in Perseus. Only about five hours of it. Two or three times that much would be nice, but it's in a weirdly inconvenient location right now. #Astronomy #Astrophotography

A very quick session with M44, the Beehive Cluster, because I woke up early and couldn't stand to waste half an hour of clear darkness. #Astronomy #Astrophotography

The thin waning crescent moon rising beside my neighbor's weather vane.

The Cone and Christmas Tree Nebulae. I've been working on this for a couple of nights now. #Astronomy #Astrophotography

M36, the Pinwheel Cluster. Very similar to the Starfish Cluster I posted a couple of days ago. They are also very close to each other. #Astronomy #Astrophotography
December 16, 2025 at 3:16 PM
This is also from last night. I wanted to get more of it tonight, but we suddenly got slammed by fog. In December. Anyway, this is M38, the Starfish Cluster in Auriga. #Astronomy #Astrophotography

This is the Cave Nebula. It's very faint. It's very hard to image. This is 15 hours of it, which would be a lot for a brighter nebula. I've been processing it off and on throughout day. This version will have to do. #Astronomy #Astrophotography

The mighty Sword of Orion, with stars. The Sword is home to the Running Man Nebula, the Great Orion Nebula, and De Mairan's Nebula, which is the one that looks like a little paisley. #Astronomy #Astrophotography
December 11, 2025 at 3:34 PM
To start your day, here's a starless image of the nebulosity in the Sword of Orion. I'm still working on it, and I'll add the stars back in. But I just had to share this. #Astronomy #Astrophotography

A better version (IMO) of IC 5070, the Pelican Nebula, after I brought it up to about 11 1/2 hours total exposure time. #Astronomy #astrophotography
December 10, 2025 at 7:14 PM
And a redo on IC 405, the Flaming Star Nebula, with seven hours of total exposure time rather than three. #Astronomy #Astrophotography
December 10, 2025 at 3:54 PM
This is the Sculptor Galaxy again, but with another two hours added from last night. And I do think it was an improvement, and worth doing. #Astronomy #Astrophotography
December 10, 2025 at 2:10 PM
I was going to just get three hours of this and move on to something else, but now it seems promising and I think I'll try to get four more hours tonight. It's IC405, the Flaming Star Nebula. #Astronomy #astrophotography
December 9, 2025 at 7:10 PM
And this is about four hours of the Sculptor Galaxy. This never goes very high over the horizon from here, and after two hours I lose it behind a tree. I might work on this for another night or two was well. #Astronomy #Astrophotography
December 9, 2025 at 3:20 PM
This is about seven hours of The Pelican (IC 5070) in Cygnus. I think I'm going to work on this for another night or two and see if I can improve the detail. #Astronomy #Astrophotography

And while I was at it, one of my favorite asterisms, the distinctive "V" of the Hyades. The bright red star is Aldebaran, the eye of the bull in Taurus. The full(ish) moon was rising in a split second, so I was trying to get creative. #Astronomy #Astrophotography
