9. The Beat of the Dragon Boat, by Christina Matula & Nicole Wong 💙📚🇨🇦

Super cute children's book touching on Chinese myth and the birth of the dragon boat races, with a bonus recipe for zongzi 🤤 (sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves)

Pick up the nearest book. Turn to page 42, post the second sentence.

'Wrapping zongzi in the stained leaves, folding the edges down and placing them in the steamer - it's just like making dumplings at home."

It was good! I'm not sure where you'd find zongzi in Seattle, but there must be some. Dim sum places, probably!

Definitely seems awesome. ^.^ I'll probably have the last of the zongzi a relative gave me tomorrow. They're bamboo-leaf-wrapped sticky rice packets with a bunch of good things inside.

“Big zongzi? Is it the type you eat at the Dragon Boat Festival?”

“……”

Chief Shao, can’t you be serious?

“The thousand year old zombies in ancient tombs are commonly known as zongzi.”

Shao Qingge, “Oh… in other words, the dead person in the coffin is suddenly moving?”

oh i love chief shao sm

And I did manage to figure out zongzi!

I should add that my parents are also phenomenal cooks…when it comes to Chinese food. My mom expertly wraps zongzi, my dad’s red-braised pork belly is amazing, etc. But back then, they were reading recipes in their second language and working without experience a lot of folks take for granted.

I've just searched on Google if the Meso-American tamales had its origin was the Chinese zongzi, since the ancestors of the Native Americans are from North-East Asia near China. Apparently not. Tamales are 10 000 years old and the Chinese zongzi only 2 300 years old...hehe. Who knows really !?

10: My comfort food is sticky rice treats! Onigiri, cifantuan, lemper, jumebokap, zongzi... they're all so good! As far as like a whole dish, I can go for almost anything seafood, especially fish.

I can make this too, but it’s a bit difficult to get shell ginger leaves (the same ones for making Chinese zongzi) out of season (Lunar New Year or Dragon Boat Festival). So banana leaves will have to do.

Inflation is out of control!
Before Trumpflation, I paid $8.99 for a pair of Zongzi at 99 Ranch. Today, they are $10.99, a 22% increase
