This is a NASA Hubble Space Telescope near-infrared-light image of a three-light-year-tall pillar of gas and dust that is being eaten away by the brilliant light from nearby stars in the tempestuous stellar nursery called the Carina Nebula, located 7,500 light-years away in the southern constellation Carina. The image marks the 20th anniversary of Hubble's launch and deployment into an orbit around Earth.
The image reveals a plethora of stars behind the gaseous veil of the nebula's wall of hydrogen, laced with dust. The foreground pillar becomes semi-transparent because infrared light from background stars penetrates through much of the dust. A few stars inside the pillar also become visible. The false colors are assigned to three different infrared wavelength ranges.
Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 observed the pillar in February and March 2010.

“I can’t help it,” her words were breathless, “it makes me so sad.”

It was then she reached out to him. With one hand she cupped his helm where his jaw should be, sweeping the other hand across his crown where his forehead would be, as if to brush his hair out of his eyes as she drew a long caress down the side of his helm’s face—his cheek. It was a gentle gesture, with all the weight of a drop of dew. He imagined how it felt if it held the tender touch of skin on skin instead of cold, hard steel. As someone with a soul of ghostfire that burned so cold, she deserved the comfort of something warm. His heart was tied up in his chest.

She stared at him with plaintive gaze and he felt ashamed.

Please was such a pretty word on her lips.

“Wylder—” it was a mournful way to say his name.

He took her wrists, absently brushing his thumbs across the backs of her hands. The leather was so rough. He hoped, at least, it was enough to convey that he would touch her gently if he could, provide her with warmth and the sense-memory of his hands that she could remember even after the day the radiant dawn would break. It would be nice to know that part of him lived on, part of him was known, remembered. Part of him was—

No. He knew what this was.

“You know I can’t sate your curiosity.” His words spilled forth unrefined.

Ghostflame, after all, was a beacon to lead the wayward soul. A version of the world had to die in order to live. He hoped Grace would bless her, cradle her future in its soft hands.

He envied this.

He wanted to be the one to touch her. He wanted to feel her smooth dollskin under his bare fingers and let himself place his hand around her neck—not with pain, not with disdain, but with gentle purpose, to caress his thumb along her jaw, press the pad of it against her pretty painted lips. He wanted to stare down at her rosy tinted cheeks in the low light of the fire, her hair undone and draped over her shoulders. To see the slight perk of her breasts under the thin fabric of her shift—he couldn’t pretend he hadn’t noticed the first time, what seemed like ages ago when he’d let her touch the scars on his arm. Eyes bright, she had treated them with reverence, but he should have been the one kneeling at her altar.

Sometimes he wondered if he had gone about his facade all wrong. He treated himself like a warrior, donned his armor like a knight. He couldn’t have or be both—was he pointedly driven, or was there somewhere his loyalties should lie?

His greatsword was marred from unsavory use—charged through the hearts of grand enemies who deserved the death that awaited them, driven and delivered by his hand. Yet he was cast to his knees just begging for one final look, one chance to touch.

He could not award himself an honor he had not earned. An honor he did not deserve.

What an amazing sight - thousands of starlings swooping and diving in unison above the nature reserve at Whixall Moss. The birds made an incredible whooshing sound as they wheeled through the sky at sunset before settling down to roost for the night.
