City dwellers think the countryside is a quiet place but in my experience that is rarely true. Right now, around our house in the countryside there are so, so many noises. The other day a procession of over 100 tractors came through the village. Residents thronged the lane and cheered loudly at the tractors, for the special effort they had made to show up and all be tractors together. Meanwhile, our nearest neighbour has decided to build some air b&b accomodation beside their enormous house. To make sure everyone is aware the air b&b accommodation is being built, they have wired up all the power tools being used to amplifiers they have borrowed from the Brixton Academy’s legendary sound system. This is so loud, it even drowns out the dogs who reside at the hostel for naughty dogs on the other side of the bridleway behind our garden. We never see these dogs, since they arrive at the hotel in blacked out high security vehicles, but we sometimes imagine what they look like. We imagine that they are not truly bad dogs, but dogs that have had a rough start in life, dogs that have made mistakes they must now pay for, mostly resulting from youthful exuberance and parental neglect. The dogs are most noisy between 9pm and midnight or around dawn, but between these two periods is when the foxes take over. The foxes sound nothing like the dogs. The foxes sound like aliens, whispering commands to one another at the top of their lungs. I cannot even attempt to translate what the foxes are saying. Sometimes we will hear one of the dogs respond to the foxes, in isolation. These barks are different to the other barks we hear coming from the pound, more vulnerable and confused. “John,” they seem to say. “I am scared by what I can hear outside. Please will you hold me, just for a second?”

I was very sorry to learn of the death, aged 79, of British-Ukrainian author Marina Lewycka.

She shot to literary stardom in 2005 with her quaint and touchingly funny novel "A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian" for which she won The Wodehouse Prize for comic writing.

It's sugarcane harvest time, and all along my running routes this time of year I hear the unintentional mashup of Louisiana French music blasting out of harvesters and tractors, and Norteño music blaring from the trucks.

It is just about the coolest thing ever.

Montpelier was a 5,000 acre plantation. Which would have been literally impossible to farm and maintain without slaves using pre-industrial technology. Even today with massive mechanized tractors it would be a huge farm.
