I work in a toolmakers where we take on around a dozen apprentices every year and have done for more than 40 years. Many of those apprentices have gone on to work in a wide range of industries and have fulfilling careers.
College degrees aren't for everyone and we need to recognise this.

I've been thinking that AI is a tool, made by toolmakers, who somehow think they can build a house using only hammers

Blessed are the sons of toolmakers! I guess you're correct, I'm part of the out-group here, though acculturated, so the whole UK class discourse thingy frazzles my brain a bit. Like cricket, I can accept its existence, but will nod off at the mention of its intricacies.

one of the things that I think makes me particularly suited to this stuff is I have been successful doing infra, tools, and features

this industry has mostly shit on infra+toolmakers for a long time and they have a thin bench in terms of the multipliers to help the easily-untracked

Bush was a tool, like trump. Difference being the toolmakers expanded their project to encompass the whole of the US government.
When George W. Bush called Iran, Iraq and North Korea an "axis of evil," he wasn't describing reality. He was creating a reality in the public imagination. An international relations scholar explains how this metaphor has shaped geopolitics for decades. buff.ly/J5PXyYO
From evil to upheaval and beyond: How the ‘axis’ metaphor shaped modern geopolitics
Using ‘axis’ to describe a grouping of countries tends to link them to a sordid past – but not always.

Looking forward to the pass-agg email in about 2 months time about how these newsletters take a huge amount of time to put together (on top of an already busy full time job!) and if you appreciate them please support by subscribing for access to the monthly AMA and bonus Toolmakers Tips section...
Keir Starmer doing an email newsletter is a good idea, but the execution needs a complete overhaul:

The specific capabilities (e.g graphics) are entirely beside the point. Employers were prepared to pay a significant premium over direct salary for great tools in many domains. The toolmakers, SGI were also losing hundreds of millions of dollars annually. e.g. www.theregister.com/1999/10/21/s...

I don't quote this to dunk, that's not my intent, but one of the most critical things to internalize is that chatbots are for toolmakers. They're toolkits for building the environment *you* need. You have to demonstrate understanding of your own needs, and some taste.

okay, but that's a you problem.

and, tbh: jira-mcp is right there, and I developed a claude skill for interacting with jira via jira-cli (to save context space) in 45 minutes. these aren't tools; they're toolkits. to use them effectively, having them help you build tools is necessary.

In 1971 they apparently moved to Schofield St in Heaton Moor, but Heaton Moor doesn't seem to have a Schofield St that I could find. They don't appear in any later directories either

You know it might not have been as expensive as you think if GM built all the parts. They would have the toolmakers already on salary. What is a GM tool maker doing the rest of the decade if they don't make changes.
Eventually, one company makes the tooling for multiple companies.
