#SSMIS
A SSMIS 91 Ghz microwave image of Typhoon Fung-wong, taken a couple of hours before landfall, very clearly shows that Uwan was in the midst of an eyewall replacement when it made landfall in Luzon. This cycle was however of course never able to fully complete.

WOW! The latest SSMIS 183 Ghz microwave image of Fung-wong (Uwan) indicates a MW brightness temperatures of less then 110 Kelvin. Literally going off the scale. Just like with IR brightness temp, lower values mean more intense convection. Not sure if I have ever seen this before.

EUMETSATs MetOp-B satellite just happened to be overhead when Kalmaegi apperently made its primary landfall on Homonhon Island. Also notice that unlike 2 hours prior, the eyewall now appears closed. Indicating Tino put the throttle more firmly to the floor in those final hours.

Latest reconnaissance fix, along with recent SSMIS overpass indicate that TS Melissa is still misaligned. Vortex appears tilted toward the north, which is left of shear. Additionally, 183-GHz imagery indicates midlevel dry air continuing to get entrained into the circulation on southern side.

Now: MeitY has proposed amendments to IT Rules 2021 to deal with synthetically generated information (deepfakes) by labelling them or identifying them using metadata. Additional obligations proposed for SSMIs.

Comments invited until November 6.

Due to unstable access to #SSMIS data, we are suspending today the distribution of our #SeaIce concentration interim climate data record based on it (OSI-430-a).
We advise all users to switch to our #AMSR2 based climate products.

Microwave imagery from the SSMIS shows deep convection wrapping around TS Gabrielle’s center, though the vortex still seems tilted toward the east. NOAA reconnaissance flights today will help to determine structure better.

Following #SSMIS impredictable data provision, in order to ensure our users with a reliable service, we are now basing our Sea Ice Index on AMSR-2-based Sea Ice Concentration product.

Release of sea ice index product version v2.3 | OSI SAF
We are now releasing version 2.3 of the OSI SAF Sea Ice Index product. As previously announced (service messages #3328 and #3329), the Sea Ice Index product (OSI-420) will in the future be calculated ...

While not taken excactly at the same time, I think it is close enough to compare the quality of the new MWI instrument to SSMIS: 89 Ghz channel looks just about the same in terms of resolution, MWI just looks more ragged for some reason. 37 Ghz channel has much improved quality.

As expected #Erin has become a very large #hurricane. However, it has lost the very tight inner core it possessed over the weekend.

A quick peak at a recent F18 SSMIS microwave image shows large outer rain bands are just as dominant as the core. 700mb FL wind max is also in the outer bands.
August 20, 2025 at 3:09 PM
GOOD THING WE STILL HAVE SSMIS
Additionally, microwave imagery from an SSMIS overpass (images courtesy CIMSS) from around 10 UTC indicates convection encircling the center of Erin. Such a signal is also consistent with imminent RI. Demonstrates the value of SSMIS for monitoring hurricanes.

New status on OSISAF Sea Ice Index.
With the continuation of SSMIS data distribution, the sea-ice index v2.2 (based on SSMIS) will continue as usual.

The newly implemented branch providing a calibrated AMSR-based index will be monitored and work as a backup.

With the announcement that the U.S. SSMIS data will continue to be distributed after 31 July, the Sea-Ice Index will continue to be produced as usual, based on SSMIS-derived sea-ice concentration, but our plan remains to upgrade the index with data from on the alternative sensor AMSR2. Stay tuned!

Until 31 July 2025, the Sea-Ice Index was based on our Sea-Ice Concentration Interim Climate Data Record using SSMIS. Last 16 days are based on the fast-track data generated faster than the nominal ones, that may differ slightly.

For all the sea ice nerds, NSIDC has announced a new version of the sea ice index that replaces SSMIS data with AMSR2 (starting Jan 1, 2025 and continuing for all future updates).

This new dataset was developed in response to the plans to kill SSMIS.

Equipped with a powerful instrument called the Special Sensor Microwave Image Sounder, or SSMIS, these satellites capture microwave imagery of hurricanes—essentially 3D X-rays. This allows forecasters to see the interior structures of storms.

*Note: to accompany this data change (SSMIS to AMSR2), I will update all of my sea ice visualizations on my website this coming weekend to be consistent with this latest version.
