#Preamp
Friend asked if those Temu mics are a good deal. Should he buy them? No.
And then the new Behringer “Neve clone” preamp. Decent parts, bad isolation, noisy at high gain. More in comments ⤵️

Reverting to bachelor life.
- The Session 400 head is dead; I killed it in the 90's
- The speaker cable for the S400 cab is too short to reach the Marshall
- I cabled the effects send from Marshall to Peavey effects receive, so had Marshall "classic" preamp but Peavey power.
- With Telecaster HS

i'm pretty happy with it, but a couple things need to be upgraded for sure...

my Behringer interface was never great to begin with, and the headphone amps are pretty noisy, and

my Mackie mixer has a dead channel, and

my Focusrite mic preamp has a dead headphone amp/knob, and a shitty XLR cable

Great to have a catchup with @g4bao.bsky.social on Friday. I now have some ideas for my EME dish feed box, which will hold all of the switchery, small PA & preamp etc. Today‘s task is to think about all of the connections needed and to 3D print a connector panel #hamradio #hamr

Canadian Pearl Hifi inc makes folded copper louvered ‘tube coolers’ that slide down and grip a vacuum tube. It acts as a heat sink, vibration damper and EMF shield. It makes tubes quieter and last longer.

Nope, I just have a good microphone (U87 kit) and preamp (SSL2+). I don’t use any EQ setting when I stream, and I send all of my audio raw when I record from home unless a client requests otherwise (and that’s on a case by case basis for what the client wants)
Any go-to microphone settings (EQ, denoise, etc) when you stream/record at home?

That’s clever!
And I love that finish!

On my hollowbody I just ran two .047uF caps in parallel on the tone knob, but it’s also a push/pull for the line boost/preamp for active/passive.

Tone is very personal & comes from guitar, amp and *speakers*. Have a Strat that had no interesting harmonics compared to a SG. It was dull, flat. Then changed strings and ran through a Fender amp with Electro-Voice speaker. With preamp vol & tone controls set, began to sing.
Is there any better guitar tone than the clean or slightly dirty tone of the middle and neck pickup on a Fender Stratocaster or strat-style guitar?

I'd always recommend local if you've got a good place. Means you'll have someone to talk to if you've any problems too. I'd also suggest a good plug and play turntable with a built in preamp: AT-120 and DP-300 are good, solid models for a fair enough price—you can build on them if you get the bug.

NOS SYLVANIA 7N7s with octal base adaptors making them equivalent to 6SN7s. In my preamp with Herbie’s Labs damping devices.

Also the noise could be the preamp tube. I'll have to swap and see.

Otherwise, no popped fuses, no shorts, it makes noise and the voltages seem correct.

So that's 80% of the way there. Needs more work, but not a complete rebuild again.

I've just understood the origin of some of the weirder old-school hifi myths after swapping unshielded RCA cable out for shielded RCA cable for a turntable-to-preamp connection (relatedly, my new turntable is excellent - fosiaudio.com/pages/fosi-a... - another Chi-Fi win!)

our newest strain of audio engineering torture is that we're starting to be able to hear all the preamp saturation on recorded voices outside of a musical context, there's so many contexts where people decide to use or emulate dirty preamps where it really sounds totally inappropriate

My 2i2 microphone preamp is toast. Piss literally poured out of it when I took it to wipe it off. Weirdly it still turns on.

Somehow my xbox controller is okay and wasn't caught in the crossfire despite sitting on top of it.

The case is obviously fucked.

The previous/original owner of the amp and preamp was an electrical engineer and had recently serviced the amp.
