People wouldn't be surprised that Hamnet is overrated if they'd paid attention to how over rated Chloe Zhao's previous movie Nomadland was.

Just because it's a worthy social topic doesn't necessarily make it excellent cinema. Nomadland was so mechanical and transparent in it's attempt to move you.

As someone who was ambivalent about Nomadland, this rings all the alarm bells. But funny!

I love Chloé Zhao and Nomadland is one of my favourite movies, but the pacing of Hamnet was a little slow especially in the beginning. Jessie Buckley’s performance was flawless and the ending (despite the song) was really very moving.

Thank you! I don't understand the allure of Zhao, and I still contend that the poverty porn of Nomadland was the worst Oscar Best Picture winner in recent memory. As for Buckley, she's a discount Sally Hawkins.

"Nomadland" (2020) depicts a live of Fern, a Usonian woman living a nomadic live: she's movie in her van adjusted to living through the U.S., catching seasonal jobs, from Amazon during the Christmas frenzy, to beet root plant. The movie feels like a half-documentary, and for a good reason […]

Nomadland felt like a beautiful film that was about to make a point.

I was traveling on the ICE train today (Germany‘s inter-city rail system, unrelated to US domestic shock troops) and they offer movie selections for streaming, so I ended up re-watching parts of Nomadland on my phone.
Even on the tiny screen, the cinematography really pops.

Nomadland won Best Picture?
January 23, 2026 at 9:03 PM
it is really funny to see people act like Sinners is some kind of unqualified interloper in the Best Picture category because 1) F1 is right there and 2) Sinners is leagues better than fucking Coda and Green Book and Nomadland and any number of other forgotten winners

Nomadland was great but Hamnet looks insanely pretentious.

I also really liked Nomadland but still… fuck Shakespeare
