#Netsuke
For @mustachebabs.com’s birthday this year, I wanted to make her a little guy. I’ve been looking thru online repositories of 3D scans of museum pieces this year, and found a recreation of an ivory netsuke sparrow fledgling. And I knew it was the ONE.

#AshmoleanAdvent Day 13: Chestnut Netsuke

Until the 19th century Japanese citizens wore a kimono, fastened by an obi (sash). Small personal items such as purses, pipes or medicine containers were hung from the sash by silk cords.

The cord was threaded through a bead, or ojime, then tucked behind the kimono sash and secured with a small ornamental toggle or counterweight called a netsuke.

Netsuke need to be small and light, like this realistically carved chestnut.

I painted the print to match the textures from the model, which also references real life versions. (One is in the Walters collection here in Baltimore)

It’s got little feet on the bottom!

I’m really pleased with how the colors came out!

Natural objects such as animals, fruits or flowers; mythical creatures and supernatural beings; theatrical masks; and historical, literary or everyday figures are taken as themes.

In the Muromachi period the idea of celebrating the Seven Gods of Fortune began in Kyōto. It is the oldest of the Shichifukujin Mairi (都七福神まいり) pilgrimages.
From Kyōto it spread across Japan.

It's popular to pilgrimage on the New Year and on the 7th of each month.

I used to collect netsuke, little Japanese carved toggles. Here’s one in the form of an octopus. I was once about to buy one made of ivory that cost as much as a car when I realized…these serve me no purpose. I like them, sure, but it’s a stretch to say they bring me joy. Never bought another one.

I had to dig this photo out, its a yellow-margined box turtle that I have. They are found in some island locations in Japan. Their shell is almost identical to the lower turtle in that netsuke.🐢

It's minor, but Mori has a fox netsuke that Zola got him the first year while the gang was in Galas Castoll (along with something for everyone else, ofc).

It's usually on his person, typically in his bag, but he'll use it where appropriate back home.

Zola's his broski. Gotta keep the homies close.
