I have a very low opinion of Lizza, but on this point I think he is credible. There's no way her employers and NYT didn't know details about her malfeasance. Nuzzi has been an obvious operative of sorts for years, terrible writer whose pieces were held together by fairy dust, and they lapped it up.

I saw someone make the really good point that Lizza was a disgruntled ex so there's a chance they didn't want to listen to him for obvious reasons. Other than that, hard agree. It is culture.

I mean, when NYMag sound out about the affair, they investigated and fired her. VF should not have given her a job, but they should have disqualified her based on the publicly available information. There’s lots of things to criticize the media for here, but distrusting Lizza isn’t one of them.

Let's shift the focus from the Nuzzi-Lizza mishegas & read what's coming out as a statement abt how SO MANY KEY ELEMENTS of the mainstream/Beltway media firmament *knowingly* enabled a stream of misinfo into the public discourse during a critical national election.
It's not just abt Nuzzi.

I still think Lizza ought to have led with all of this much earlier, but this tracks quite well with how these publications visibly chose, at every turn, to handle Nuzzi with kid gloves even when it was manifestly clear how rotten she was. I think he's telling the truth here

One of the biggest reasons we are where we are is the complete & utter failure of our news media to do the basic tenets of their jobs. Nuzzi, Weiss, Lizza are the results of it, not the cause

I'm inclined now to agree with @michaelhobbes.bsky.social here: Lizza, despite profoundly sucking in a lot of ways, is the most straightforward and honest actor here by a country mile, which is insanely damning for everyone involved
