Id: "I don't see any reason why--"
Superego: *hits the alarm button* *braces self*
Id: "gnosticism couldn't have existed in world of the Mesopotamian game."
Superego: "DON'T YOU DO IT! DON'T YOU GO DOWN THAT RABBIT HOLE!"
Id: (from deep within the rabbit hole) "What? I can't hear you!"

This ethnic gnosticism some progressives and leftists exhibit towards Indigenous people is really weird.

There is nothing intrinsic to Indigenous groups about why they treat the natural world better than us, they just aren't exploiting it for the benefits of capitalists.

and/or one of the less anti-world forms of gnosticism

i love how every critical thinker raised in the church eventually reinvents gnosticism

Whatever happened to smoking herbs and laying on the bellies of your friends as you weave flowers into oneanother's hair and ponder the courses of wandering stars? Whatever happened to using our organic computational capacity for gnosticism?
Token Anxiety

i think i mostly echo this for myself. with so much that can be done, i often feel like i *should* be doing something, always

a thing ive been meaning to spend some time figuring out but have not yet is what gnosticism would've even meant to tolkien when he was writing this, it would've been pre nag hammadi library

[nodding sagely] gnosticism
February 13, 2026 at 11:22 PM
Um! Hard to say what's weird to who! But...
1 cults, and the psychology that perpetuates them
2 occult history, which has branched into fun weird areas of the history of various religions, especially Christianity (gnosticism is so entertaining)
3 for lunch I love having something I call goblin ramen

I think gnosticism as we usually understand it may require the sort of state/culture where where it's difficult to imagine an outside within the material world (like the Roman Empire was for those classical gnostics). So maybe Assyria at its height, but more definitely Persia for those within?
February 15, 2026 at 2:35 PM
all I'm saying is that gnosticism being the right one would be EXTREMELY funny

Gnosticism is a tough sell for some people because Jesus has essentially been the symbol for ritual abuse and cultism in the USA since it was founded

Which averages out to be basically Gnosticism.

The difference between Gnosticism and early orthodox Christianity is also somewhat arbitrary, as both were influenced by the same Neoplatonic ideas, ideas which Tolkien would have been familiar with and very much played up in his work.

“Can’t you just read what it says in the manual?” My sweet child, let me explain Gnosticism to you and the many ways the Demiurge will thwart us from ecstatic divine revelation. Now the glasses should go here first…

Any doctoral student or early career scholar want to give an online guest lecture on Marcion (preferably) or second century Christianity (but not gnosticism) more broadly?

I think I can offer you a $100 stipend for a 45 minute talk. Needs to be MWF 10-1050.

Akkadian phrase of tonight:
Lā watar!

("Enough!" or "At last!")

Enough work on the second proofs of one edited book and the writing of a new article for tonight. It's 00:57, and I'm going home!

Seeing tons of people find Gnosticism due to the E-files wasnt something I expected

I feel this has 2 main results:
- many more people wake up
- the other side manipulates it into a full blown Satanic Panic

I'd been wondering what trigger they'd find to kick off the inevitable SP

Are you curious about Gnosticism?

If you are curious about the Demiurge, Yaldabaoth, the Monad, or a view of Christianity that is not tainted by imperialist dogma, you may be interested in the Great Scripture series where I give my own commentary on great Gnostic works.

I'm aware. I went through a strictly christianity-free VALIS after writing this last year: maddisonstoff.neocities.org/roko. I wasn't really even aware of gnosticism before it started, but I understand it intimately now. It drove me insane briefly too, of course.

It sounds harsh but listen: this man gets his information from (1) nowhere and (2) fox, which is worse than nowhere. And he's trying to argue with me about the finer points of ... I don't even remember. The LDS church, maybe? Gnosticism? He doesn't even KNOW any Mormons. He can't SPELL "gnostic."
